Femur loosened from metal?
« on: September 14, 2012, 02:47:44 PM »
Hi all,

I went to a new OS (#4) yesterday to see why my knees still hurt so much - left knee TKA 11/09, right knee TKA 7/10.
We decided to concentrate on the right knee for now because it hurts the worse. He said the femur might have loosened so he ordered a bone scan possibly followed by a CT scan.  I won't know any more for a few weeks.

I'm wondering if anyone has had this case where the femur loosened from the metal part? I have really really bad pain in the medial section of the knee.  I didn't think there was much pain on the lateral side of the right but yesterday when the OS & resident were poking it they found a couple spots that really hurt. That knee really can't do much activity at all without causing hours of intense burning, throbbing pain. Once in awhile I also have the feeling that something is crammed up under the kneecap.  I also sometimes get pain directly under the kneecap but it's not related to the kneecap because the cap moves freely & does not hurt on its underside if I push down on it.

I guess I'll find out more once the tests are done but for now I'm just curious if others have had this & if they got it resolved.

Thanks!

Hi MyKnee2010,

What is the make of your implant? Zimmer seem to be having loosening problems with their NexGen CR Flex implant, especially when fitted using the minimally invasive technique.
If you look up oohyeah4 on this forum (2 and 3 pages back) his name is Rob, he has had loosening of the implant (Zimmer) and has since had a successful revision (using another Zimmer implant), you will learn a lot from his experiences.
As for the pain behind the knee cap, I have had ongoing pain for 3 years after a right TKR (Zimmer NexGen CR Flex), I too thought that the implant was loose because I had pain after standing, especially when lifting my leg after standing or walking, I eventually had a arthroscopy which revealed that I had grade 3 OA on my patellar. I have just had the patellar resurfaced and I am praying that it will be the end of the terrible pain, time will tell, but the thing is, I could move the knee cap around OK and even kneel on it OK without pain (You can get referred pain from anywhere in the knee joint, even from your hip or back) huntingandmoon, Diana, found a great surgeon that used a anaesthetic in her knee to eliminate referred pain brilliant yet so simple.
Good luck and I hope that you find a solution soon, it can be very, very frustrating.

Cheers, Martin

Thanks for the response Martin! I have DePuy PFC knees in both legs. I will look up the guy you mentioned. I'm curious to see if my symptoms match someone who had this problem. I had a scope this past February but the OS who did it said he couldn't really see anything in there because the light was shining off the metal. Maybe he just wasn't good at doing it. He's the same guy who said revisions don't help so don't even think about doing that. I fired him. I wish now I hadn't wasted my time & money on him at all.

I guess this is just a continual learning experience.

Thanks again,
Phoebe
