Revision on Left Knee
« on: September 07, 2012, 01:58:07 AM »
Newbie here so please bare with me.  Hello everyone.  I have had 9 operations on left knee since 98. Had a hto with a fixator in 2000. In 05 had tkr Dr that had tons of work because of the hto. Had to cut ligament to straighten my leg because to valgus. In june of this year had a revision on my leg. Just a nightmare from the beginnig, but my main problem right now is that my revision knee is 2" longer than my other knee. Went yesterday to docs he was amazed how this looks. Did not look at my chart then just said because of the ligament I had to put this knee in. Told him other dr who did first tkr had to cut the ligament. Well he told me you just need a lift in your shoe. I told him I came for a knee replacement not a leg extension. He said nothing he can do, I will have to use a lift. Has anyone else had such a large difference in leg length. So I am thinking my other leg will go and then my hips because why, I just don't understand.  Thanks for letting me vent.   Bill

Hi Bill,

Sorry to hear about all your problems it sounds like you have had a terrible time.
Personally I would go for a second opinion immediately.
Obviously the surgeon (Butcher) has made a terrible error, there is no way your leg should be longer (Maybe millimetres but certainly not 2”) And for him to say wear a correction shoe is beyond belief.
I am sure that a competent surgeon will be able to fit the correct implant for you but you will have to go through the whole process again which I am sure you won’t be looking forward to, but if you don’t have it changed you will have a lot of other problems, as you have correctly pointed out, it will effect your other knee, your back, your hips, and you will be walking with a terrible limp, it will really miserable for you.
Don’t worry about venting your anger, we all do it.
I hope that you find a good surgeon soon.
Good luck.

Cheers, Martin

Hi Bill,

The way OS #1 looked at me, you would have thought I was a crazy person when I told him my right leg felt longer (after the TKR) and couldn't clear the floor.  He also told me to get a lift  in my shoe.  Like an idiot, I did that but it didn't help one bit.  I fired him and saw OS #2 who said all I needed was a thicker liner (spacer).  So, I had that done.  Seemed to help for a while but the pain and instability return with a vengeance.  Saw OS #'s 3 & 4, heard a bunch of nonsense.  Finally, OS #5 said the whole implant has to come out...that will be done on 9/11.  What Martin said is 100% true, you will have other problems if the leg length discrepancy isn't corrected.  I limp terribly, have severe valgus, and my hip, SI joint and back are a mess.

I know it's frustrating trying to find an OS who listens and offers an intelligent solution but please don't give up.  We're here to encourage you to keeping on going to get the help you deserve!

Diana

Thank You Diana and Martin. I am making an appoinment tomorrow for a second opinion. Tuesday I have to go to an othosis ( i guess that is how you spell it) he will measure my legs to see how off they are.  Listen to  what he recommends. Telling them on the phone they are amazed that the difference is that much. (I am just going to listen) I honestly believe that the dr. knows he screwed up. Just by his facial features when he looked at the legs. I want to thank you guys again.  Diana, good luck on Tuesday with your surgery. You will feel like a new person. Take care       Bill

Agree with posts above, there is no way that one leg should be shorter than the other.

Mine was after 1 revision, but that was because I couldn't get my leg straight - consequently the difference in length.

I used every raise going - heel, full foot, special designed raise - all completely useless.

Hopefully a 2nd opinion will help
