MRSA after patellabreak...what now ????
« on: September 03, 2012, 04:17:19 PM »
Hi !
I will make a long story short. I'm 28 years old female. I took a nasty fall after slipping in a pool area and had a patella break with open wound of skin through. After repair I developed MRSA and had to have the repair inclluding my patella taken out.
I have had some more clean outs surgeries after that, been on antibiotics, developed meningities. Yes life has been hell.
Am still in hospital and after clearance I finally had surgery to repair my knee as good as it gets without patella and attaching some ligaments.
Turns out that all went to hell cause there is MRSA still. Have had 2 more clean outs and now I'm facing what life will be:
I have 2 choices...either to try tough this out, though I know I will never be able walk normally, run or something like that, but keep my leg hopefully or just have an amputation above knee and that's it.
Is there anyone here that have faced that same and what did you if so do ?
I want to get back to my active life, am tired of hospital and I just want to continue to live.
/Malin

Hi MDJ,

God love you, you have been through a lot bad enough to break your patella without all that happening you.
I have not been faced with anything like that or the decision to have an amputation. For what it's worth I think amputation would be my last resort, I know you probably feel like this is your last resort. Did your surgeon give you any indication as to if it would be better to amputate or give it one last attempt to save your leg. This is just my opinion but personally I would give the surgeon another go at trying to clean out the effected area and if that fails then i'd probably give in and opt for the amputation.
I know it's probably very easy for me to say this as i've never been faced with such a life changing decision. Whatever decision you make I wish you all the very best and a speedy recovery. I really hope things start to improve for you

Thanks for the answer. I was forced to take the amputation. Check under post op stories...Amputation after MRSA/Malin
