Depressed
« on: August 31, 2012, 04:41:02 PM »
I love being able to get out of the house now that I'm a little more mobile but whenever I get home I get really depressed. Not sure if it's because I'm around a lot of able-bodied people and I'm unable to walk yet or what. Anyone else get this feeling during your recovery?

I hear ya Johnny!   I can't stand being laid up.   I had an arthroscopy and it seemed like forever even after just a  couple of weeks of hopping around.   Even after a year or so just thinking of doing the other knee makes me depressed.   It seemes like you are never going to get better.   What helped me was not looking at the crutches, pillows, blankets and the sofa.   I kept my mind on other things like work.   I'me a stenographer and can work from home.   I have hobbies as well and tried as much as possible to research knee problems and that is how I found this site.
The more able-bodied you become,  the happier you will be and it does pass.   I don't know what kind of surgery you had but I hope you are up and walking around soon.  Know that you are not alone.

Thanks for the reassurance. Since my injury back in march it has been a physical and emotional roller coaster ride for my family and I. I was in a dirtbike crash in march where I tore my ACL, PCL and MCL, in may I had surgery and all ligaments were replaced with cadaver parts and I've been going through PT since then. I am getting better compared to where I was after my crash but it feels like I'm never going to get off crutches. And I know I will but it still sucks not being able to. I'm glad I found this site and feel better knowing I'm not alone. Thanks

I am assuming your not working yet and your family has been very supportive.   I thinks you had better stay off the dirt bike in the future.   All kidding aside,  you have getting better to look forward to.   PT helps alot but don't do too much too soon.   It's easy to do when you're bored.   Good Luck to you and your family.    LAS

Thank you. Yes, you're correct, I'm not back working yet, I'm technically retired, I retired from policework a little over a year ago, I guess you can say I'm enjoying retirement....:), and I run a small lawn business which my youngest brother is taking care of for me, thankfully.
Stay off my dirtbike?  I don't see that happening, I enjoy it too much and our 5 year old rides too and he has lots of riding in him and so do I once I'm fully recovered. Knowing I'll be able to do the things I use to keeps me going and plugging away.

I'me really not surprised that you will be back doing the things you love to do and again it's something to look forward to.   I'me not at all surprised either that your depressed cause that's alot of surgery, alot of PT.   It took me probably 6 months to recover entirely and I thought the PT would never end.  It was a drag.   Again my surgery was not as extensive as yours and everybody recouperates differently.   It's pretty normal to feel the way you do under the circumstances and deep down you know what you have to do to get there.   I am actually very glad to hear you will return to the dirtbike and teach the 5 year old how to ride.   Let us know your progress.   LAS

I understand entirely. I'm currently 3 weeks post op on a MPFL reconstruction after a year of battling against surgery. I've been a competitive dancer for the past 9 years and this year, I didn't get to compete at all because of my knee. Now I'm sitting on the couch while all my friends go to nationals and I can't even get up and get my own supper! It's so frustrating and depressing. However, I know in a year I'll be going with them and I'll be stronger than ever which makes it all worth while!

Hang in there, Purling. MPFL is the ligament that goes down the front of the knee, right?  I remember being 3 weeks out, it sucked and felt like how am I ever going to recover from this but it does get better. I'm almost exactly 4 months out from my surgery and I'm finally starting to feel like I'm coming back from the dead. Hang in there, it gets better.

I'm finally starting to feel like I'm getting better. Today I walked to my neighbors house about 2 blocks away, mostly on one crutch. I feel like I'm coming back from the dead.
