had first Euflexxa injection 3 days ago, feels like  someone set a fire inside my knee then left it smoldering! It's extremely painful to bend or straighten knee or do anything weight bearing inc walking. called doc's office and they recommended the usual, ice, elevate and 3 ibuprofen every 4 hrs. Am scheduled to rec second dose on Friday but told them if this doesn't,t improve soon I doubt I'll be able to endure another one or I seriously won't be able to walk. Wondering if anyone has had similar trouble, or gone on to have success after a rocky start with Euflexxa?  Appreciate any replies, thank you!

hey.

if you had a bad reaction that lasts long I wouldn't do it again. you could be allergic or just had a bad reaction to the drug.

euflexxa has ingredients that may come from chickens i would definitely suggest switching brands if you want to keep going with the HA injections

I would try Ostenil, it is not derived from animals and rarely has an side effects.

Euflexxa is poultry free I believe (Lottiefox of this parish swears by it).  I had ostenil x 3 earlier this year and it seems to have helped - the second jab was very painful as I wasn't properly relaxed and the OS missed the joint space but found the bone - ouchy!  I did read the pack insert, but if I am honest I can't recall but I think it may be totally synthetic. I had Durolane before, one jab during a scope which seemed to help as well,  no adverse reactions to either, then I am about the least allergic person around!

Came off bike onto concrete 9/9/09
LK arthroscopy 8/2/10
Partial meniscectomy, mfx not needed - smooth scar tissue over OC lesion, shaving of lateral aspect of patella - grade III defect
2nd scope on 16/12/10, chondroplasty & Durolane jab
Cartilage damage on femur & tibia
Knee being ignored ;-)

Honeybunch,

Thanks so much for your reply. I don't have enough posts to send personal messages yet. My MCL tear was indeed a twisting injury, I fell skiing and twisted it on the way down. Injury did not heal well and was not handled well by first OS. Eventually got most of my motion back but have been plagued by pain, swelling ever since. fast forward to Eflexxa, it was a disaster and I had to xl second two injections. My knee is much worse than before it, and good knee is very painful too from putting in overtime. I just got my own copy of last MRI and it indicates that MCL thickening, inflammation have decreased but shows subtle chrondomalacia, as well as a tilted patella, subluxed laterally. Not sure why doc didn't,t mention this! Am seeing him Friday and will bring up. Do any of those symptoms sound like what you had with your Osteochrondal damage/underlying cartilage tear? How did they finally diagnose it? Would love to hear all about it!

Vickster,

I had high hopes for synthetic Euflexxa but couldn't  continue. PA said maybe my knee just had an adverse reaction to a foreign substance being injected, and that she had never had that happen before. Not sure what I'm going to do next, but good to know about Ostenil as possible alternative, I'm glad it helped you. Is it still working?

Euflexxa is really only useful if there is arthritis in the joint of some degree or at least relatively significant chondral damage/wear. I have had Euflexxa 3 times in left knee and twice in right over space about 2 years 5 months. It has helped me a lot as has proper PT. Euflexxa has no rooster derivatives as Vicks said.

You can also get a nasty reaction should the injection not be "aimed" quite right.  :P
Bilateral patella OA since 2009, no surgeries.
Euflexxa working well x3 to current
Right forefoot CRPS post fusion surgery 2011
Refusing to let the ailing parts stop me....

No kidding - hurts way less than 2ml of PRP into a not very big tendon however!!  :o

The Ostenil seems to be working for me - less conscious of knee, less stiff, less painful on stairs

yes symptoms sound the same. the osteochondral lesions showed up on the second MRI 6 months after initial injury. its been a year and at the 6 month mark it was better with prolotherapy. but that only seemed to help for a month at a time... human growth hormone injections worked very well until I jumped back into life too quickly, i should have given them way more time to work because I felt 100% 6 weeks after the HGH but then i worked out too hard and i felt like i re-tore it because symptoms came back.

now its been a year, and the knee bothers me but not as badly as before. now i'm plagued with a meniscus tear in my other knee, tennis elbow in both arms, and peroneal tendonitis is poking out on my ankle from overuse on the opposite knee. so those things all hurt more than the original knee injury. and today I started working and my knee has been burning.

honestly its a nightmare. if you can try the human growth hormone definitely give it time to grow new cartilage and harden before using it.

how many months after injury is this MRI of yours?

my first and most recent mri both show a bone bruise. I dont know how my knee 10 months post injury still shows bone bruising . also the first mri only showed grade 1 mcl thickening and they shrugged it off saying its painful now but it will heal.

Honeybunch,

My MRIs have never shown bone bruising, but 10 months sounds like a long time. My most recent MRI was in May, which was 15 months after orig injury.

i would def try human growth hormone at some point if deemed a good candidate - will you try it again ever?  i would not beat yourself up over doing too much too fast, I can't tell you how many times I've thought I finally beat this knee thing, started rehab/strenghtening/exercise full force only to have symptoms come back with a vengeance. Why I felt so good the first two weeks in July I actually considered taking up jogging, walking seemed too easy! Ha!

I saw my OS today and  told him couldn't continue Euflexxa due to major pain/aching in both knees now, along with excrutiating muscle tightness in hammies. My knees are too unstable right now. I think combo of injection, back to school shopping and return to work after summer off created the perfect storm. He put me on seven day corse of prednisone. Small victory, though, I found a segue to ask OS for referral to director of practice! I got an appt in a couple of weeks and will ask many questions, many from these posts. He will be my fourth OS...

I'm so sorry to hear of your additional pain and injuries stemming from original, just when you think it can't get any worse, right?  Wishing you as pain free day as possible
