Struggling!! Please Help
« on: August 16, 2012, 06:53:08 AM »
Hi all

Need some advice/help/guidance please...

I am 10 weeks post op and have been weight bearing and going without the crutches for about a week.  I have just started this week going on the exercise bike at physio and my knee on monday was at 110 degrees flexion.

Since Monday my knee and calf muscles have become so tight I can hardly walk now..  I have tried icing/elevating/ i tried a day in bed with no exercise and still the same..  The pain is pretty bad but more so in my calf and ankle when trying to walk.  It is especially bad in the morning like now! and can hardly get out of bed.

Does anyone have any experience of this.. im worried cos OS wants full bend in the next 3 weeks otherwise Ive got this release.  Ive also tried taking tonic water as this is supposed to relieve cramp but still no good..

Help anyone please?!

Have you sought advice from your physio? I am prone to tight calf muscles and a good sports massage from my physio does wonders for me!

Good luck!

Hi

Thanks for your response, unfortunately I have had private physio before and that was hands on.  I am this time in the care of the wonderful NHS and so far the closest anyone has come to me is the curtain of the cubicle!!

I agree it might need a good rub but they aint gonna do it! did they give you any exercise that may help with the tightness?

Severe pain in calf/ankle bad enough to make it impossible to walk should really be checked out by your GP. Tight muscles are more likely than the culprit but seeing as you've had recent surgery you should get a medical opinion just to rule out anything like a DVT especially as your leg has had restricted motion etc. Personally I would be putting a call into my GP to just get checked over - even with our NHS they won't want to take any risks and at least then they can perhaps advise on what might help as well.

Good luck!

I agree - and your GP might even refer you to a physio for sports massage. If not, I'm not sure whether this will be an option for you but you could have a look and see if you can find a local physio that does sports massage cheaply. I live in London and even with increased costs here if I were to pay for private care myself I think the cost would be around £45/£60 a session. Just one session might provide weeks of relief so its worth a thought!
