How long after cortisone injection can I have surgery?

My understanding from reading the posts is that it is not wise to have surgery soon after having cortisone injected into the joint that will be operated on.  Does anyone know how long I need to wait after having a cortisone injection before getting surgery?  Is two weeks long enough?

Best ask your surgeon - s/he will know best.  Also, best to wait for the cortisone to work fully surely ?  I'd personally give it as long as possible, certainly 3 months.  What is wrong with your knee?  Have you tried ice, physio etc...surgery should be the last option

Thanks for your response.  I have synovitis, and have had surgery on my other knee for the same thing.  I have tried everything, and this cortisone shot was the last thing I was planning on trying before surgery.  I will give it a little more time to be sure the cortisone doesn't make a difference.  I really don't want to have another surgery!

I just heard from the surgeon and he thought three weeks between the shot and surgery would be enough time. Should I be suspicious?  Or does that sound like a reasonable amount of time?

DiegHenj, I am in the same situation so I am VERY interested in your post.  I am also interested in how long the injections typically last?  I have not received any feedback on this question.

I don't think you should be suspicious, unless you have reason to believe that your Doctor is untrustworthy?

My Doctor says you should give a cortisone injection 6 weeks to tell whether it has helped or not. But that does not mean you have to wait that long before you have surgery.

Good luck whichever way it goes.
