Numbness In Thigh
« on: July 30, 2012, 12:32:12 PM »
It's been several years since I posted here on kneeguru after my December 05' fracture.  According to my surgeon, the fracture was horrendous and required 6 hours of surgery with bone grafting (my tp had "exploded") a plate, 6 screws, and 29 staples to close.  Rehab was fast and I've been extremely active (cycling, jogging, golf, etc.) and basically pain free.  While not as strong as my left leg, the right has not given me any serious issues at all.

Fast forward to a few weeks ago and while on a 10 hour flight to Brazil, the quad on my injured leg started to become numb just above the knee.  I thought it was temporary and had something to do with being inactive for a long period of time.  However, I take flights of this duration 3-4x per year and have never had this experience.  I had hoped it would go away, but it hasn't...  I also thought perhaps heavy excercise/activity would correct it, but it hasn't...  It does seem to be moving up my quad and even around to the right side more than when I first noticed.  I'm not real sure about that however since I didn't map the numbness well from the start.

As I said, there is no pain at all, just a numbness/tingling which sometimes has the sensation of being wet/hot/cold.  I've not been to see a doctor about this yet (my wife is furious) but will this week.  My inclination is to see my surgeon, but this appears to be muscular or nerve related.  When I had my daughter to his office one year ago for a knee issue, he suggested I come for a followup.  Here's my chance...

This is not something I cannot live with, but is annoying and if there is any risk to avoiding treatment, I will certainly take it seriously.  Are there any other TPF'ers with this experience so long after your injury?

Hi there,

I'm glad to hear it just feels numb or odd, but my guess based on years of back issues is that you have a nerve that is being pinched.  Do get it checked out asap.  The longer you go with something like this the more likely it is that it won't reverse.  Some of these things are back related and some can just be due to swelling.  Your hours of immobility in the plane might have irritated a nerve root.  The area you are describing is where I have had issues from L4/ L5 vertebrae, although I get what feels like electric shocks.

Good luck on getting to the bottom of this issue.

Hi Exoman
I'm about 2 years out from TPF with displaced complex cominuted fracture which my insurance declined surgery on. They waited too long to find a cheaper doctor so I'm stuck with what I have for a while. I have numbness on the front outer part of thigh from just above the knee to about halfway to the hip. Doc says it's nerve damage and may be reversible with surgery when knee is replaced in a few years down the road. Doesn't bother me nearly as much as not being able to run or jump.
