Those of us who post on here are just here to share our good and bad experiences so you don't have to make our mistakes and can cut to the chase on your rehab.
Good healing

Hi Linda,
I have a question, I may have limped a little bit after my surgery, but not too gingerly as I recall. Reading what you said about it affecting my walking stride and straining my hips, how can I fix that? I'm walking pretty normally, in my opinion, but your input will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Rjay,
The hip problems happened to me when I started to feel good and went from very short steps in a boot to trying to walk with normal length strides. It was after 8 weeks in a boot to heal a break in my heel, then ankle tendon transfer and 6 weeks no weight bearing, then another 12 weeks in a boot. My walking was very messed up by then. You have not had that much time for your hips to tighten up. That surgery, meniscus trim, and my first partial all happened within a 2 year span, so you can see why my walking got messed up and took a long time to get back to normal. Your gait is probably fine, but it is easy to check it.
One simple way to judge your stride length is to see if you are takiing equal length steps when you walk with a friend who is the same height. Try it at a leisure pace and at a fast pace. Ask a friend or your PT to really watch that you are not limping, that you are lifting each foot and knee in the same manner, and stepping down with the heel, not with your foot more flattened like in a marching gait. In my case I worked with a trainer who did gait analysis and taped me walking on a treadmill so he could look at each part of the step and give me specific exercises to improve my gait. I had to retrain my body to walk normally without thinking about it by very deliberately working on stepping correctly and raising my knee further, etc.
Hope this helps!

Hi Linda,
Thankyou so much for the tip on not limping. My GOd! After reading what you wrote and all...i realized that I do walk in a strange way...my gait is in no way normal... I'll keep a check on my gait and talk to my physiotherapist about it too. Thank you so much for pointing it out.
My college starts this monday and I was just wondering if something needs to be done about my shoes. Thank you for the tip there too
You sure have had it tough...may God bless you and your mom with health.
Stay safe. Stay healthy

Hi rjay,
I met with a physiotherapist today. Since i still have somw swelling in my knee and its been a week since the surgery, so i asked him about it. he daid that it will take time but i could help my knee by keeping it elevated. For that he said to keep a foot hold or something underneath the foot of the affected leg every time i sat down. And just like Linda said earlier, to sleep with something under the foot (of the affected leg once again
) to keep the whole leg elevated. And not under the knee, like Linda mentioned before. Just thought to let you know
Good healing to you and mountain.
And a thank you to Linda

Hi Guys,
I really haven't had it so tough. I have had an excellent caring surgeon, terrific PT, and I heal really fast. Everything that has been worked on has gone back to normal and i live with very few limits and no pain. The ones who have it tough are the ones who are still struggling after multiple surgeries and those for whom nothing else can be done. I'm one of the lucky ones who has always been fixable.

Hello,
Linda its great to hear you are doing great to this day. Your story is truly giving me high hopes.
Ramzi, my knee as a whole was swollen for about 2 weeks, but it's still a little swollen around the incisions to this day. I see progress though. The swelling is down and almost back to normal size. How's your progress?

Hi Rjay,
Great to hear the swelling is almost gone. The incisions-thats another thing altogether. Even now three years later if I get any swelling at all after really overdoing things, I see it at the little incisions from the meniscus trim. They swell up like little rounded bumps. So expect to see swelling there for quite a while.
Have a great weekend.

Hi guys,
It's been a week and 3 days since the op. There is a slight decrease in the swelling since the 1st day and all but it's still there. And yeah you guys are right, the incisions are swollen alot more than the rest of the knee. I was thinking maybe it's not right, the swelling, so i asked. But i'm glad to know that it takes time to go down an mine is proressing nicely
Thanx.

Hi,
Try to avoid impact sports after subtotal meniscectomy because it usually leads to early arthritis. Read this article, if your interesested about arthritis ->
http://www.eorthopod.com/content/osteoarthritis-knee
.
Good luck
