Does anyone know about recovery time from MPFL?!?!
« on: July 23, 2012, 09:43:21 PM »

Hey,

I'm due to have a MPFL on my right knee on the 21st of August. I'm finding it really hard finding out how long I'm going to be out of action for, anyhow long until I can drive again.

It's really important for my job as I work with people who have had strokes and have to plan ahead, but my surgeon off on annual leave at the moment so I can't find out until the week before my surgery! I would be really really grateful for any advice or experience any one had!

Thank you!!!

hey :)

it differs with surgeons. my surgeon did both my knees and didnt put me in a brace. some people are in a brace foe 6 weeks after the surgery.
im currently 38 days post op and my right knee bends fanatastically and i just am really building the mucsle back on it now. my left is terrible with only a 50o bend and cant even lift it yet. every knee is different. id say 6-8weeks and you'll be fine as if its only the one getting done it wont be as difficult.
im not a doctor tho so you are best to ask him but 6-8 weeks seems to be the norm. just work hard on heel slides and leg raises!! :) good luck!

It varies:  I'm in braces for 6 weeks (had bilateral MPFL done 6 days ago)  but was told I can drive as soon as I can get into the car and am off pain meds.  I've previoiusly had TTT done and I think if you had that done, that would definitely have an impact on driving as well due to limitations with bending to allow time for the bone to heal.

Does your surgeon have e-mail where you can try to contact him, in case he checks it when he's out of the office?

Doctor protocal varies, as does healing/progression for the individual.

As a general rule of thumb from someone who has been through it and on the other side. The MPFL isn't an easy surgery, and I wouldn't plan on being back to normal life/speed until about 12 weeks. I was back at work and driving at about 2 weeks, but I sit at a desk. If you need to be on your feet and active for work, it will likely be longer. The best thing my surgeon drilled into my head was be realistic in your expectations and goals

unfortunately the most accurate info is going to come from your surgeon in terms of bracing, timeline, goals, etc. - perhaps you could contact his office to see if they have his standard protocal to provide you with?
