TPF 6 / casting, heel sore issue
« on: July 22, 2012, 01:15:20 PM »
i havent been on for a while, been geeting the post op pain under control and was mostly stuck in bed with my leg elevated>> had my two week post op appt, and they removed 56 staples between the two incesions.. i was in total shock when they unwrapped the surgical dressing to see that the two incesions go from the side of my knee to almost my ankle...apparently my tibia was shattered that far down in addition to the type 6 TPF...my leg & knee still swollen & looks kind of misshappen to me.. apperently im having some nerve damage issues with my ankle & foot. the doc had to manipulate my ankle to 90 degrees because i could not move it on my own. its like my ankle doesnt exsist, i can feel it but cant get it to move. and they gave me a hard cast from my thighs to the tips of my toes... bulk is one word for it... i am having extreme pain & burning on my heal, i am thinking that maybe i am getting a pressure sore.. my surgeon is 5 hours away so i can not just run into the office for advice. my next appt is in two weeks. do i need to seek help for this or can it wait., my doc is kind of an ass & im sure if i called he would just tell me to deal with it. how has anyone else handled casting & heel sores?? i am so over my head here! help ???

I had a similar problem when bed bound in a full length plaster. A trip to my local hospital resulted in them cutting out the heel so there was no pressure point. Make sure they use Elastoplast and cotton wool to round off the exposed edges or perhaps do it yourselves.

When they cut off the heel a small shower of bits of plaster fell out and it was those bits that were causing the pressure points apparently.
