How is the recovery going? I hope it's getting better. :-)

91 days post op: Thanks for asking. The knee is so much better than the last time I was on here. Really had nothing new to share. Things changed just this week. The last 3 weeks I had been doing same exercises and knee flexion was 120 something for weeks. I had added more weight that was all. This week I have been able to sit Indian style and sit and cross my right leg. After a few minutes, knee is sore. But progress. Then this week therapist let me do the stairmaster. I have finally started the balancing exercises with mini squat. Knee is sore during this one, but happy to do a new exercise. Lastly, flexion is at 133. Gadha007, how are things with your recovery?

Hello Ciara!
Happy to find one more person that had the patellar tendon as me.
Also we had our ops pretty much close to each other.I am now in 54 day post-op.
Ciara i want to ask you something that bothers me.
Generally my knee is doing well i think, except some pops, and weird sounds here and there.
My only major problem is the stiffness in the area just below the kneecap, right where the patellar tendon starts. When i walk it feels like i have something that prevents my knee to move freely without any burden. When i massage the area ,only then the knee is loose again and i feel good. But this emotion fades away really soon, and i have to massage constantly.
Are you experiencing this or have you had it in the first days?
Does your knee feel like the other now?Ι noticed you said that your OS told you to massage more this area i am describing due to the adhesions.Yes this is common, but is this eventually go away?I think yes,but the time varies perhaps...
My doctor sais it is normal and that there is scar tissue that is being developed there,as the tendon is being cut off,so there is a "damage" in the area.
It may pass up to 5 month since this softens and feels like the other good knee.
Thanks for your replies!!!
John

@rainman14, I still get stiff if I sit for to long, but nothing compared to months ago. I have not had any stiffness below the kneecap. I get strange sensations by the incision on top of kneecap. I have a 3" incision from the middle of kneecap to below it. I am getting more noises at night especially in the knee than I had when I first had surgery. I hope what you have goes away. I hope my pain eventually goes away. Time heals as they say. I do not regret using the patella tendon, but wish there was not a huge scar down the knee. Good luck with your recovery. Keep me posted with your progress. I will be starting my 13 week of therapy. I will find out tomorrow whether dr gives another 4 weeks or not.

HI Ciara,
thanks for sharing with us your news.
On the contrary,i do not experiencing any serious pain at all at my kneecap,or my knee.
Only when i walk large distances it pains, but not too much.If i rest for 2 minutes i am ok then.
I am also be able to sit indian style and i am only at 55 days post op.
The only irritating thing is this stiffness in the tendon area, anyway as you said i hope this will get away soon.At least the streches of the quads help a lot.
Perhaps there are some small adhesions as your OS told you, thats why he told you to massage it more.
Time surely heals,i agree.
I will keep you posted,do not worry.

102 post op: still doing the same exercises with a few changes. I am now doing single leg exercise on the leg press. I have started to jog on the treadmill. First day knee was sore when jogging for a minute. I have attempted to jog yestereday, but seem to have pain in the shin. Almost feels like shin splints. I will keep working at the jogging and hope it goes away. Dr will determine whether I go back to regular job in a few weeks depends on the jogging or dr mentioned impact. The patella tendon has fully fused in the right knee. I did get to see the x ray of it. Can anyone tell me the correct name of the balancing exercises and what other exercises do you do when it comes to balancing. I am doing both legs in different directions with mini square? Thanks for any help.

Hi Ciara
I'm doing pretty well, thanks for asking. I hhve been stuck at strengthening though and the improvements are very hard to see. I didn't hit the gym for a couple weeks and there was a tremendous difference in my strength.
I think the exercises you are looking for come under the category of propriocpetion which involves using a stability trainer, stabiltiy trainer. I would say that you should hold off these equipment for a while longer or at least not do any single legged stuff on them.

Gadha007, glad you are doing good. It seems strengthening takes a long time. My quad muscle in the injured leg is still smaller than the good leg. Time, I have to get myself to the gym. I was given permission to do the other leg machines like abductors and even the leg extension with light weights. I appreciate the name of those exercises I was looking for. 117 days post op, still doing all the same at therapy. I rode my horse for the first time since surgery on two trail rides with permission. All I was worried about was on and off the horse. Knee did really well. Other muscles were more sore. I had friends hold my horse and others help me on and off. I am now just using a stool. It is so nice getting back to activities that I have missed since surgery. Next week I go back to the dr. There is a chance I will be back on normal job earlier than I expected, but it is s wait and see. I ended up tweaking my knee yesterday. I was on uneven ground and knee went one way and my body another way. I felt something move in the knee. It has been sore ever since, but not swollen. Thanks for listening. It is nice for all the support on this site.

Post op 138 days: just a quick update, I went to the doctor at the 18 week post op and he released me to go back to my real job. I have been back two weeks so far. The knee feels weak, but so far there is only some soreness from probably doing more than I had. I am doing another 4 weeks of therapy just to be on the safe side. I am still doing all the same ones except I added an exercise to strengthen the shin. I put a weight on my shoe while hanging my leg off the bed and I move my foot up and then down for 3 sets of 20. These last few weeks of therapy are going to take longer because I can only go 2 times a week because I am putting in more hours.

186 post op--I can't believe it has been 6 months from surgery. Last week I was finally discharged from doctor and physical therapy. Knee is doing great overall. I do have some constant pain in the kneecap, but I hope that goes away as I continue to strengthen the knee. It still feels weak, but stable. I do not feel comfortable at this time to do any sports. I hope to get myself into better shape and I will work on those exercises for sports if I ever decide to play. I am just happy to be able to run again and do my normal activities without having to worry that the knee will go out. I wish good luck to those who are now dealing with the injury. In the beginning it seems like your knee will never get better, but with the rehab it is amazing how the knee improves.
