Muscles Tightening after TKR ~ NORMAL??
« on: July 16, 2012, 04:34:51 PM »
I had a TKR on my right knee on 6/11 and am progressing normally, I'm thinking.  The main problem I'm having is a tightening of the muscles (I guess) around the knee.  It drives me NUTSO!!!  The minute I get up to walk, they tighten up.  This happened following my patellar resurfacing surgery in '09 also.  Has anyone experienced this and is it normal??  Also ~ any advice on relaxing those muscles??

Thanks!

Hi there,

Glad to hear that your surgery went well and you are on the mend.  During surgery your knee was moved around in ways it really did n't like and now with your new hardware it has to adjust to being different.  Some muscles and ligaments have to stretch and some to tighten as they re-balance to your new normal.  I found that the process takes several months-my second PKR was in February, was doing great, then in June I went through the random muscle tightening again for a couple of weeks before it settled down again.  A friend of mine who is an athletic trainer and massage therapist spent a couple of hours on loosening things up and I was fine after that.  You might want to try a massage-with your doctor's permission- or ask your physical therapist to work on loosening up things that are tight.  I have also found that a heat pack followed by massaging my own muscles helps.

Good luck and good healing. :)

Thanks, Linda.  My PT definitely does the loosening and she's awesome!!  I actually haven't had a problem when I did a very simple thing she suggested.....Epsom salt soak....only I didn't dare get in the tub even though hubby could have helped me out!!!  Just took a hand towel and get soaking and placing it over the entire knee area.

Glad to hear the epsom salts are helping.  You can do just a foot soak for about 30 minutes too if you want and you will find it helps the knee.  You absorb the magnesium through the skin and it is important for relaxing muscles throughout the body.

Good luck and good healing! :)

Thanks for the tip on Epsom salts. ladies.

I've never heard of it, but will certainly have a go to see if it helps my muscles around the knee
