Possible tear of ACL graft?
« on: July 15, 2012, 11:20:51 PM »
I had ACL recostruction on my left knee 17 days ago using a hamstring graft. Everything has gone well and I was able to achieve 110 degrees of flexion at my 2 week post-op appt, but then 2 days ago I was at a much needed trip to the coast and I was moving from the dock and stepping onto a boat (ofcourse with assistance), when I felt pain in my affected knee. I was wearing my ACL brace and did not hear a pop (which I didnt hear with my initial tear). I didnt collapse, just felt a pain similar to the pain I have felt behind my knee cap, but a little worse. After I calmed down, I tried to bend my knee and I could bend it further than I could before. I'm extremely sad/paranoid/worried that I retore my graft. I contacted a doctor and he said that there would have to be significant trama to tear it (running, cutting, jumping etc.) but I'm still worried just because a have a larger ROM know. I haven't had instability, but I haven't really tested it because I'm still wearing my brace and using one crutch. Has this happened to anyone else? Could my graft be torn?

Only a doctor or therapist in real life can reassure you so get someone to check it out to put your mind at ease. But I think everyone has that OMG moment at some point early in the rehab. Nine times out of ten everything is OK, but no-one here can tell you for sure, so try and see a real life practitioner.

The graft is new, it is quite strong now, even stronger than your busted one maybe. But from 6 weeks or so onwards to about 12 weeks it is weaker and that is the real danger period for wrecking the graft. This is because the knee fells way better than it actually is and many people ignore their rehab protocol and do too much, resulting in the graft being retorn!
