adverse reaction to SYNVISC one
« on: July 12, 2012, 12:53:06 PM »
Hi I'm looking to see if anyone had a bad reaction to synvisc one. I've had synvisc before the 3 series and had a great outcome. I later tried Orthovisc and did not have any luck. 4 years later I tried again with the synvisc one. I had the injection and was fine limping around a little not bad but started to notice limited range of motion 5 hours later with in an hour the pain was getting BAD. By 5 hours the pain was OFF the charts and I could not walk at all. I took a heavy duty pain med with no help at all. The swelling was incrediable. I called the doc at 8am he was in surgery but his office called back with him requesting me to come in at noon and be seen by him or one of the other docs in his office. I was lucky he arrived. He immediatly said I had a bad reaction and we needed to drain the knee. He drained it took about 3 oz of this orangeish, yellowish brownish fluid and he gave me a cortizone injection. He mentioned it did not look good and sent it to be tested. Told me not to worry but there is a small chance it is infected. I asked what do you do if it is, do I take an antibiotic. HE said no and he'd rather wiat to discuss it as he did not want to worry me. My doc is usualy very good about this stuff but now I'm waiting on 2 days for info on the fluid and getting anxious. The swelling is down, my range of motion is much better its sore but not off the charts and I can walk without crutches. So my thinking is everything must be good now.
Anyone else have this type of reaction? Anyone have any info on whats next.

My last surgery for my knee ws 6 years ago (we are holding off as I want to keep as much bone in myknee as I can) I wear an unloader brace all day everyday for the last 5 years as my knee has colapsed due to lack of bone and no meniscus. This is all my lateral side, however my medial side is now showing some detereation which is why we opted for the synvisc again. Only other option for my knee is osteotomy or replacement. NOT ready as I am only 41. I'm hoping to get ot 50. Ihave had several surgeries and I'm just not the gung ho surgery girl. 2 where major. Also had hip surgery March 2011 due to my gait being off had sinificant issues in my hip that needed surgery in the hope to avoid hip replacement some day. AND I happy to say my hip is amazing. I workout 6 days a week for 90 minutes lift and do other things I shouldn't do but I am a gym rat and know it won't last. Just some side info for anyone who can help sometimes it helps. I had carticel surgery the failed. All my issues started when I was 15 I dislocated my knee and chopped of MOST of my chondal. Which I refused to admit was a broken and waited 24 hours to go to the hospital limped around like that causing my damage. They put the chondal back and the knee cap but about 10 years later big issues started. and here I am 26 years later holding off on the big one.

THANKS TO anyone who can help JEN

Just had my knee drained again last night. 2nd time in 13 days. My fault for even waiting that long but I just was hoping it woudl get better should have went 5 days ago. Doc drained it but no cortizone, thank god.

Now I'm off my feet indefintly and taking some anit-inflamitory with some insane side affects. Anyone have a reaction like this? I really think there is something else up it cna't be because of synvisc. Today is just as bad as yesterday and I haven't done anything but sit sit sit! ugh! Can't even get my unloader brace on.

I have to go see my son 20 hours away in 2 weeks as he is in the army and leaving for parts I can't discuss, but how am I going there like this if driving is difficult? Any advice or even thoughts on this would be great!

Did they tell you the test results for the drained fluid ?
I will remember that there is art to medicine as well as science, and that warmth, sympathy, and understanding may outweigh the surgeon's knife or the chemist's drug.

I will not be ashamed to say "I know not", nor will I fail to call in my colleagues when the skills of another are needed.

Use Ice as well and elevate your knee.  I have never had a reaction to the synvisc one and only had 1 injection of it and it worked pretty well.  I always thougt that it doesn't work very well if you have bone on bone.   The color of the fluid does sound like it is infected and the antiobiotic takes 48 hours to work anyway.   Give it some time and if you don't get good results they may change your antiobiotic to something stronger.   It sounds very painful so I would stay off of it as much as possible.   Yes what were the results of the aspiration?  LAS

THANKS for your posts i take all your advice andthoughts as you all have been there done this!

The test of the first fluid was ok no infection gout or ect. This last fluid we are still waiting for results but it looked okay. It was the color of urine (gross description sorry best one that fits). I should have gone in much earlier but I just wanted to hold off I'm not the rush to the doc kinda chick. Plus we had so much going on around her who has time.

I have been icing it so much I think i have frost bite. NO seriously 20 minutes on about a dozen times a day. Ice, Compress Elevate my 3 favorite words right now. Oh and I have  few not so nice ones cuz I'm getting grouchy!

I'm starting to think its more something else and the synvisc set it off. I have a lump behind my knee that is hard as a rock. My cafe sore my foot is tingly. When my knee is not at its worst it looks more deformed then usual. We all know that but this is even funkier. Its warm to tough as well and thats with the compress being off for awhile. Also noticed this morning I may have some bruising above the area where he drained last but not the actual area.

RECAP-synvisc incjection on july 9th drained july 10th swelling went down with I-C-E and rest. swelling returned july 13 limited range of motion, swore, warm, blablabalba july 22nd drained again. Now off my feet till docs says and just waiting...........

@LAS I didn't know that about the bone on bone. I am bone on bone. The reason we tried it is that it is starting to progress faster. We had it at a good "slow down" with my unloader brace but now my medial side is looking almost as equal to my lateral and my lateral is horiable! Understaement. lol.

Pretty much the synvisc won't work the worse your knee gets and the synvisc becomes less effective.  I don't know how much cartilege you have  but it needs cartilege to work with.    They give it to you until there is no benefit from it and with a reaction like that, it's certainly not working for you.   Has the OS discussed surgery?   LAS

I am bone on bone no meniscus on the bad side (lateral). I think I have a tear on the medial but thats just me no MRI yet. I have 2 quater size holes that are just basicly fiber cartliage. Holding out as long as I can before Knee replacement. The hope was 40. I'm 41. Now I hope for 50 but I think and doc thinks thats a stretch, however.....He was shocked I got to 41 and pleased. I am determened. I wear a lateral unloader brace and I am VERY active.
I am going to see my son in  2 weeks so any type of surgery I will not discuss until after that. He is in the army and it is very important we see him. if you get my meaning. Plus I am a teacher so any time of surgery can not or I should say I will not let interfere greatly during the school year. YES...Im a bit difficutl aren't I? I'm stubborn thats how I made it to 41 when 35 was the time.

Its very difficult having to deal with children serving their country and on top of it dealing with the kind of knee problems you have.   I don't blame you at all for holding out on surgery.  Getting to see your son will make you feel a heck of alot better even with all the pain you are experiencing.   You sound like one tough lady and I respect that.   Having surgery at 41 is a little young but sometimes you have no choice and I assume  that you are talking about that  TKR you mentioned previously.  I know others who have had that surgery and are doing much better so all the more power to you.   You will have a better quality of life.   Have a wonderful visit with your son and I am grateful for his service.    Let us know the results of the MRI.    LAS
