Confusion About Subluxation and Method of Treatment
« on: July 11, 2012, 02:47:57 AM »
Exactly 2 weeks ago I injured my knee while making my bed (silly I know, but I was kneeling and heard a pop and it was all over after that) since then my knee hasn't been the same. I went to the ER the following day, but after taking x-rays I was told there was nothing wrong and that it was just a sprain. Because bending was excruciating I managed to get my hands on an immobilizer which helped a bit, but I've still been in a fair amount of pain.
I saw a orthopedist today who did no tests other than hearing about my injury and my history of knee problems (dislocation, sprains, and tissue tears in the past) he told me that I had what's called patellar subluxation which, to my understanding, means that my knee cap almost dislocates, but not entirely. He gave me a knew brace to facilitate more movement while holding my kneecap in place and told me to work on bending it and to sleep without the brace. I've been bending it a little bit, but it's quiet uncomfortable and locks up when I try to straighten it. I'm very concerned about sleeping without my brace tonight, but I'd like to follow doctors orders.

I'm just wondering if anyone else has any information on this condition, especially similar experiences and whether or not its okay to sleep without a brace with the lack of ROM that I have currently and the fact that my knee locks and catches so unpleasantly.
Any help would be appreciated, I'm very worried. Thanks!

Also, in addition to the subluxation, I also suffer from RND which is making my discomfort exponentially worse. If anyone has any insight on how to treat both of these things together, please let me know.

In addition to everything I have previously said. I just suddenly, while resting in bed, got stabbing pains in the lower left of my knee cap which is trigger spasms that were remarkably painful. I have put my brace on which is seeming to help a  little bit. Does anyone know if this is normal or of concern? Should I continue my work on general range of motion or stop and call my doctor in the morning?

Hi
I'm not sure what RND is but I occasionally get knee sublaxation. I can feel my kneecap sliding out so I usually give it a whack to push it back.
I had a TPF so my doc said it's from a muscle imbalance in my thighs. My inner thigh (VMO) is significant weaker than my outer thigh.

Has your ortho doc suggested seeing a PT?

I have a small brace kind of thing. It's got a hole where the knee cap is to keep it in place. I don't sleep with it on and only wear it on my 'bad' days. My PT has also tried different taping methods but I find the brace is better.

Perhaps you should speak to your doctor, especially if it's really painful. Let us know how it goes
