So many questions
« on: June 09, 2012, 08:25:21 PM »
Sorry to be a pain everyone but I've so many questions (see my posting below too, please). i've read so much on this thread; pleased I'm far from the only person to have surprise mfx's.  Does your knee get more painful 3  days post trochlear groove mfx?  Does the bone continue to bleed for a while after  mfx? What's the effect if you've got osteoporosis? I've now read so many articles  but still full of questions. Thanks for all your help and support.

Try to read and understand more about this procedure when you can. 3 days post surgery is nothing. I am 11 moths post surgery and I responded well to the treatment but for my first 3 days post surgery I was on my back, laying down in bed watching tv with Oxycontin in my body. There is absolutely no need for you to think that you should feel any better after 3 days after surgery. I know you are scared and I was also. I woke up to surprise MFX aswell after I was told I just had to repair my meniscus. But bil, we need more details about yourself before we can talk about you. How old are you? How did you get the injury? etc .

It is very good that you are willing to learn.

I'm 63 and try to keep fit swimming four times a week with a water exercise session too.  I support my mid- 20s disabled son with high level wheelchair boccia (bowling); this involves stretching, picking up balls etc.  Knee problems started over 30 years ago and the latest surgery was about tbe 16/17th procedure. Padt ones inc bil lateral releases, open meniscal repair, bil plica excision and multiple arrhroscopic tear removals.  Oa knees, hips and spine plus osteoporosis. Not sure how the latterwill affect mfx recovery.  I'm going for my first physio appointment tomorrow, luckily at the uk orthopaedic hospital where surgery was performed. I'v had one leg rebandaged in a compression bandage again yester by gp nurse who says it must stay for another week to prevent re-occurence of bleeding - this is the very crackly knee.  I'v read so much on web since op but all advice and support appreciated. Thanks all! xx!

Physio told me he could not believe mfx performed on one knee but to do two at once was completely unbelievable. One knee clearly has large effusion. Felt alternatives would have been better (tkr) Ideally need six weeks bedrest.......but as impractical, minor straight leg exercises prescribed; ways of standing out of a chair discussed; walking within limits ok bu no footpaths/countryside. Driving only on straight roads if absolutely necessary (can do an emergency stop if needed so ok there but need to limit clutch use as involves bending knee hence straight roads! Back for review in 2 weeks and will look at building up exercise in another 4 weeks - assured there will be lots of swimming pool work (I love swimming and miss it already).  If only I'd had chance to discuss procedure first.

Three weeks today since bil mfx.  Right knee feels crackly and full of fluid; left very sore at side back plus swollen.  Physio today reminded me fractures take to heal and "pain may go in 12 - 14 weeks- or longer...." he's advised to carry on with minimal leg bending and gentle exercises straight leg raises and similar.  He's booked me in for hydrotherapy next week but NO swimming for another three weeks....both he and I have some doubts about whether surgery on both knees together will be successful! Walkings slow and feels odd as one knee clicks and the other hurts and is stiff but I gave him my crutches back - have spare pair if needed!

Now six weeks.  Os says postop bleeding may mean a more favourable result on that knee though doubts remain over both sore and creaky knees.  Physio now taped left one to move patella.  Seeing main physio fortnightly with hydrotherapy physio weekly.  Now allowed gentle swimming and gentle bending. Os cannot rule out further surgery but will review in three months.
