Tony's seeing the OS again...
« on: June 07, 2012, 01:06:40 AM »
So in efforts to figure out what is wrong with my left knee... I see the OS Dr. Lewis next thursday. Here's the low down,  had problems with my left knee for 7 yrs now. Tore a small fragment of my lateral meniscus in September of 11, had surgery in october, small resection of the lateral meniscus, some loose acl threads, etc. Since the op, I can walk without the limp but.. I can't walk more then a km without extreme pain, same goes for crouching, going through the ROM. Extreme tenderness along the lateral joint line. Some slight locking.. My regular OS is at a loss for the situation but admitted that when she did the repairs she didn't believe that it would solve my issues within that knee. So she referred me to dr lewis. I can't play sports, walk to loose some weight to make it easier on my knee, etc. At a state of insane frustration with these issues. Anyone have any ides as to what this could be? please feel free to comment

Tony, sorry to hear about your frustruations.  It is difficult to draw conclusions on this so I will instead ask a few more questions.

Can you describe the pain?  Location, intensity.  What does it feel like?  Is it tissue pain, more of a tooth ache, etc?

Sorry for the questions :)

no worries, it will hopefully lead me tward a diagnosis. It's tissue, feels much like a meniscus tear, it starts along the posterior area and transfers right across the joint line and ends with a very bad pain/ache throughout the whole lateral joint compartment. Lasting for hours. Usually the full day, nsaids don't help neither does ice/heat

Tony, does patella femoral syndrom sound like it fits your symptoms?

I've considered it, but it doesn't seem to quite fit, the pain seems to be too posterior on the lateral side and after my last op the os said the cartelidge on the condyles and under the pattela seemed "pristine"

forgot to mention a lot of lateral instability, any kind of blow to the left knee on the lateral side ends in crumpling and agony

Hi Tony!

I hope Dr. L can figure out what is going on with you.  Did you ever get a repeat MRI from Dr. W??  Well, at least you have having better luck getting referred here than I did.  Neither Dr. L or Dr. W would see me on consult!  Did Dr. W consider that your lateral meniscus may be torn again??  Mine was shaved down last year before the revision, and now I have a tear!  Was your tear posterior horn?  I am just thinking about the pain on the back of your knee.

Good luck with Dr. L.  He is good, and has been at it a long time!  Keep us updated!

Never had another MRI, just shunted to dr L then halifax if he can't figure it out. I've wondered as many of my symptoms mirror a meniscus tear. IT was the posterior horn, so maybe there is some hidden in behind the LCL or around the back of my capsule. Perhaps they have to go outside the knee to find it. All I know is it sucks LOL

Thank you W, appreciate the kind words. If he is having a good day I'm sure I will be satisfied ;)

Word of warning!  Don't come off as knowing too much.  He likes to teach, so if you let him explain things to you, he is usually really nice.  Ask your questions in such a way like you don't really know..lol!play dumb, but still ask...if you know what I mean)  If you come off as knowing too much, he might not be as nice..lol!  You get more out of them when they are nice.

But...like I said, he is good!  If he can't figure it out, then I guess it is Stanish in Halifax.  I think you should ask about another MRI before getting chopped again!

You know I know this from work...right??

ahhh play dumb, good thinking I was thinking of strategy tonight at work lol. Thanks for that, I'd be willing to get chopped if he had a pretty good idea of what it was - the wait for an mri. Still thinking a posterior horn of lateral meniscus or maybe a LCL fiber(s) entrapped in the joint. idk, all guesswork from my pov :p YEss, well aware of how you know these tips :p If he doesn't know then it'll be hali of WHSCC $. I dont care as long as it gets fixed

just realized I can twist that knee almost to 90 degrees medially. Gruesome, but could this mean the dreaded plc injury?

Tony,

I could twist my knee around when I had no ACL, but who knows!  I am guessing that you are in with Dr. L right now!  I am anxiously awaiting his verdict!!
