Thanks Cjlynn!

I can walk almost normally up and down stairs. Today was my last PT for this week, because I'm flying to Germany tomorrow. I'll have 2 more visits on Monday and Tuesday and that's it. After that I should go to the gym and to swim.

I'm happy that I feel ready to walk round Frankfurt and see as much as possible.

7 WEEKS:
I went to Frankfurt for 4 days. I had no problems. I had to wear high heels on the second day but it was ok. I tried to walk slowly and carefully. The third day I stretched my hamstring on the back of my knee. I had some pain that day but on the next morning it was fine. The last day I was on a walking tour around the city and spent some more time outside. My phone counted that I walked 12,7km. My feet were tired but I had no problem with the knee.

Today I visited the PT for a first time since Wednesday (4 days no PT). He wasn't happy that I didn't do my exercises while traveling. He's not available till next week so we decided that I'll start going to the gym and we'll meet next friday (29.06). Then he'll measure my ROM and girth ot the leg and prepare a program with exercises.

8 WEEKS:
I'm going to the gym every day. I missed only on Friday because I was too lazy. It's a bit too much going to work and going to the gym every day :/ And I'm using the stairs at work as a stepper. Anyways... I feel fine. I just can't wait to meet my PT on Friday and measure my leg.

I noticed a couple of times that my ankle is swollen. There was no pain. I don't know was it because of the heat or because I'm compensation some of the motion of the knee with my ankle. It's ok last a couple of days.

2 MONTHS:
Yesterday was my last visit to the PT. He was very happy with my progress. I can fold my leg almost as much as the healthy one. My muscles are bigger but there is still 1-2cm difference compared with the other leg (my healthy leg's muscles are also bigger than when they were measured at the beginning). The PT said I should continue working out every day and I should drive the bike ~20mins/day. Swiming is also good for me. The PT didn't give me a program with exercises, but he said that stretching is also very important and told me what to do. We'll meet in a month and I'm expected to be completely recovered till then.

3 MONTHS:
I was too lazy/busy the last 3 weeks to go to the gym. I just went swimming a couple of times.

I visited my PT 2 days ago. ROM 140 degrees which is more than the normal (125-135), but still not my personal normal (~150). The PT was happy with the results. There is still a bit difference between the miscles of my legs, but it's only ~1cm. The PT sait that everything's fine and the fact that I didn't have any problems till now means that the implant is fine. I have lately acute sharp pain where the big scar is. He said that's normal because some of the sensitivity is coming back. I should also start doing some sport (dances, joga.. whatever). That will help me keep my leg fit. And I'm happy the PT said I can ice skate.

I still don't feel completely recovered, but everything's great for now.

Hey La-La!

I am curious- how old are you and what kind of work-out/exercise/athletics do you regularly do (when your knee isn't acting up)? It seems like your recovery was easier and faster compared to most people on here. I wonder if its because you just had the MPFL recon (without other surgical procedures) or if because you are naturally very physically fit/active...

I am looking at getting the MPFL recon (and maybe TTO) done and have been wondering how quickly/slowly I will heal compared to others... I am really active and have really strong legs, I'm hoping that will help me out! Crossing my fingers! I go to the Dr next week to get my MRI results and talk options...

Hey YogaGirl!

I'm 23 and before the surgery I went to the gym for 3 months but nothing else. And that was, because a couple of doctors told me that my muscules should be stronger. I haven't done any sport before that for 8 years (after my first surgery). I just like ice skating a c ouple of times in winter, but I definitely can't say that I was in good shape.

I don't know why the recovery is so fast, but it was the same after the first surgery I had. In general I can say that I'm not afraid of trying my limits after surgery and I know how much to push myself.

If you google "MPFL reconstruction recovery", you'll find a lot of medical articles that show the stages of recovery for every week. But don't forget it's very individual for everybody.

Fingers crossed for you! :)

Hey La-La

I am totally amazed by your recovery! You have done so well! I am 18 days post op and am not too sure how I am doing to be honest. I havent been to any physiotherapy yet but have my follow up appointment with my consultant on Monday so I guess I will find out if i am on track then.

Just curious, when did you feel comfortable enough to drive and walk unaided? Also is your bend completely back to what it was before your surgery or will it always feel a bit stiff? When you started back to the gym, what type of exercises did you start off doing?

Natasha1995,

I started walking without crutches and brace a month after the surgery (as my PT told me to do). About driving I can't say, because I don't drive ;). My bend... I guess you mean range of motion (ROM) or how much I can fold my leg is still not completely back. You can see my progress in my diary. My PT told me that it will be recovered completely sooner or later and I don't need to do anything specific any more. About the exercises in the gym... my PT told me what to do. In general I used all the machines for legs, but don't forget that every procedure/person is unique and you should follow the instructions of your PT very strictly.

Hope you'll be back to normal soon :)

5 MONTHS

As my PT told me I started to dance. I chose Indonesian dances and now we're practicing this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4RjbanN9xec&fb_source=message

Well... you can guess that it's a challenge for me to sit like this but I improve and now I can stay in this position for ~10min. Then I need to move a bit then I can go back.

Except this I feel fine. Here is a photo of my knee.
