TTO/TTO with MPFL Reconstruction Rehab Issues
« on: May 18, 2012, 05:34:32 PM »
I am looking to see if anyone has had a TTT to cure patela alta at the same time as having an MPFL reconstruction.

The reason I ask is due to having the surgery on the 16th May, currently I am 2 days into the recovery. The pain is bearable and the swelling is plentiful.

The issue I have is that I have been told to work on the range of movement straight away. However, whe I am working through thebending motion of the knee, I get between 10 and 20 degrees of the bend and the knee pops from the medial side to a more central location. This is causing me some distress as this feels very strange and cant be right.

Can anyone advise if they have experienced the same? Is it due to the tightness of the joint and the swelling? Slightly freaking out!

Any advice is welcomed.

Hi, I also had MPFL reconstruction on 29th march so I'm nearly 4 months post op. I was also told to get the range of movement going immediately after surgery but caused me great pain but it had to be done! I'm posting to see how far you are along with recovery e.g how are you walking, whats your range of movement now and what does our physio think? The reason I'm asking is my physio is constantly saying you should be further on but I personally feel iv done well. I have been working really hard at my exercises, iv joined gym and swim weekly. I hope yours is well.

Hey x

Hope you're feeling ok x

I had tto plus mpfl reconstruction and I can tell you that even now almost 4 months post op I'm at times in tears due to the pain.  I was never braced, only put in a cast for two weeks and was non weight bearing for approx 6 weeks, thereafter it was full weight bearing on both crutches and now I'm down to one crutch, my pain is intense at times, I frequent a & e almost weekly due to pain.

As for range of movement, take it easy, do little lots and never overdo, don't push your body too far end always ice afterwards, I've from day one of physio always taken my meds half hour before and iced afterward it's helped greatly, I now have a 115 degree bend and can do afull but painful revolution on a stationary bike.  Don't expect things to get better in days, you've had major surgery. It's both physically and mentally demanding but you'll get there :-) just takes a wee bit time x ice, meds and tissues for when the tears come are gonna be your best friends for the next few months x

Take care and don't stress too much

Oh I know the popping you mean!! Try sitting at the edge of a sofa and using your good leg and placing it in front of your operated leg and push back with it, it helps get a better bend. Mine used to pop put I persisted with that type of bending plus standing holding a kitchen counter or wall and doing a standing leg curl! That's when I felt the pop sensation most but it's gone now :-D

I'm away back to sleep, hate the pain!!! I feel it's never ending!
