Patellar Tracking Disorder - set for surgery??
« on: November 08, 2012, 07:39:54 PM »
Hello everyone. In September 2011 I competed in Warrior Dash after training for several months. It is a 5k obstacle course, with this particular one taking place on a small mountain. I finished great and continued to run as usual but my left knee began to hurt. I worried of arthritis because it runs in my family, though I am only 26 now. After x-rays and an MRI my doctor sent me to physical therapy where I was diagnosed with a patellar tracking problem. I spent 6 or 8 weeks in physical therapy and did the stretches and exercises he taught me for 7 months with no real relief. I have not been able to run in a year, I can't sit in a chair w/out having my leg extended on a foot stool or other chair, I can't sit on the floor, I have to sleep with a pillow under my leg and much of the time my knee is taped. After 12 full months of dealing with this I went back to the doctor and he told me that we could try injecting cortisone into my knee, with a warning that if it didn't work, he was referring me to an orthopedic surgeon. One week later, my knee is no better (I will NEVER get cortisone again!) and I am to see a surgeon next week.

What I want to know from anyone who has had the same problem as me is, is it worth it? Is surgery going to make the pain go away? How long will I be down for? What is my recovery going to look like? How long until I can go back to work? I would appreciate any advice you are willing to offer!

What was the results of the MRI? Patellar tracking can be corrected several ways. Cartilage damage as a result of maltracking a much bigger issue.

The MRI only showed an inflamed kneecap and it was only read by my doctor, not an orthopedic specialist.

Try not to worry/over think it to much until you see the ortho doc. Just because you've been referred to a surgeon doesnt mean it will result in surgery. As CIB says there are a lot of different surgical options, and that is dependant on what the cause of the mal-tracking/pain. An Ortho Specialist will be able to better pinpoint this info, and will have a better idea of how to treat with out surgery possibly.

CIB,

Get multiple opinions from OS.  Make very sure you have someone who knows what they are doing.  If a General Practitioner is reading your films without consulting an OS, I would definitely run away.  Find a surgeon who is recommended by someone YOU KNOW.  Post his name, your diagnosis, and consult with the smart people on this site.

I'm 9 days out from my lateral release now. Is it laughable that I thought I'd be 100% by now? I am getting better; I can almost walk normal, and I can straighten my leg. However, bending it is still very hard and I have quite a bit of swelling still. The surgeon made it sound like such a minor surgery that I guess i assumed the healing would be very quick. And in some ways it has been quick. But I really thought after about 3 days i would be normal again. I've learned that the phrase "no surgery is minor" is very true.

Is the LR the only thing they did to your knee?  Recovery is hard, take it easy and keep in touch.

I had a LR done with both of my TTTs. The LR will feel fine after about a week and a hard to two weeks. Just have your pt work on loosening up your quad and bending.
