Consistant Knee Pain
« on: January 09, 2012, 03:55:10 PM »
May 14 2009 I tripped over a steel pipe sticking out of the ground, I was at work and they sent me to s Doc IN a Box clinic. They gave me a brace and come back in a week. I went back and the doctor said who put the brace on, I said your nurse. He took it off, looked at and gave me a cortisione shot. It continued to be painful. I finally went back after several weeks and the doctor said I needed to see a orthopedic doctor. So I made an appointment, the orthopedic doctor stated I would need a menuscus repair. Surgery done, felt pretty good for about a week, then my knee started to swell and lock up. He gave me an injection, didnt work, next was suparts, after 3 injections no good, suggested TKR. Had that done, went thru the physical therapy stuff but could not get my leg to straighten out. Went back to the surgeon, he was standing in the door way and said I need to go back in. This was for a poly exchange. Took out a large one and put in a small one, back to physical therapy. Have trouble laying my leg flat and lifting it off the table, wasnt going to happen, still in lots of pain,no I an starting to fall, have to use hands to push myself up out of a chair. Now MY Doctor sends me to a neurologist for EMG test. Had test done, test showed possible femoral nerve damage and something else, called a lesion. Went back to my orthopedic doctor,he sebds ne right back the the neurologist, different doctor, but is same group. This doctor does about 1/3 the testing the one did and states he finds nothing. So here I am stiil in pain (1-10) about a constant 7, using percoset 10-325 to help. After much thought I decided to seek a 2nd opinion, saw a Doctor at the Medical college of Va, he examined me and found out what the problem was. My doctor overstuffed my knee, then realized it was a problem, took out the big polly and installed a small one, well what is happing with all that extra room. The top implant will override the lower implant causing me to fall at times, the 2nd opinion doctor stated he will have to remove all that has been done and redo the knee properly. but now I have to go back to the original doctor this week so he can place work restrictions on me, not knowing I have seen another doctor, basically he is through with me. I feel he is  not providing the standard of care that a doctor should. He has not touched my knee in over 5 months, it took this new doctor about 10 minutes to find out what the problem is.

Wow!  That is brutal.  I would put in a formal complaint against that doctor.  I really hope that this new doc can help you solve the initial problem and get you back on your feet again....without falling.  Good luck to you and let us know how it is going.

holy crap!  that sucks!  from a meniscal repair to a tkr, only to find out he messed up and then mess up the fix.  you should definitely file a formal complaint and do something about care like this.  i'm sure your first doc even charged you for his original mistake.  i can only imagine how much money this guy has caused you to spend.  i really hope your new doc can help you.  this site has been so helpful in helping me to find the best doc for my care and i hope it can do the same for you

Krunzer and guam are spot-on. Complain about that first doc as soon as you have the energy to do so. Sounds like he did an appalling job and has left your knee in a mess. Couldn't believe it when I read that he'd boomeranged from a meniscus tear to injections to a TKR.....

Can't imagine how crap things seem right now, but you have found a doc you trust, which after what you've been through is a major step forwards. Keep asking questions and make sure no-one goes inside your knee again without a damn good reason and a clear plan.

This site is, if not a life-saver, then a constant source of help and support for all things knee related. I'm so glad I found it when I did. Hope it helps just a bit to know that everyone here understands knee pain and all the crap that comes with it and the effects on your life and work. Come back as often as you need to and update with how things are going - on bad days just how you're feeling. It does help to 'vent' as we tend to call it.  ::)

One piece of advice, you will find that your post will find people with more experience of your particular situation if you change the title to something more specific. If you click on the 'modify' button at the top and change the title to something like 'Meniscus repair failed, so TKR done. Now need total revision.' or something similar. Also, have a troll through the rest of the site, particularly the specialists area, there will be threads on TKR and revision where you might find some helpful stuff.

Take care of yourself and try to keep positive. Hope you get some relief soon and a plan in place to sort your TKR out.

Wow.  What a terrible story.  I was totally shocked to read of your knee problems.  I smell a possible malpractice suit.

I wish you the best of luck on getting this mess straightened out.  Please keep us up to date on your progression.  This is an awesome site and I'm sure you will find that you get a lot of moral support here.

Be well and stay strong.
