Hello everyone,

I am looking for some advice regarding my knee.  I will begin with a short of a summation of my situation.  I am a 34 year old woman and I am over weight.  For the past year, I have been trying to change this and get healthy.  I started running when I was very overweight.  I ran for about 5-6 months without incident.  I then began a regimen called "power 90".  This is a strength training/cardio/yoga program.  I did this 6 days a week for 3 months.  I lost 30 lbs.  I was feeling great.  I progressed to the power 90 masters series, a more advanced version of the program.  I was doing great, feeling great until I got cocky and was attempting more advance moves than I was capable of.  I ended up with bursitis in my right knee.  I ceased activity for 2 weeks, than began easy--low impact activity.  My knee healed and just as I was resuming my program, my left knee started to behave oddly.  It started "popping" lightly with each step, mistracking.  (There was no traumatic injury) I do not have health insurance and the "pain" is not significant.  It is just annoying and there is a dull ache in my quad and knee.  The popping would cease for about an hour after stretching/working out then it would resume.  This has been going on for a week and half now.  I feel a small muscle knot on the left top of my knee cap.  I have read a lot of online resources.  Some say parts of your quad are weak if this happens.  Others report that the muscles could be too strong/over worked and thus shortening and pulling knee out of place.  I have been doing stretches of the quad muscles individually to try and identify the culprit to no avail.  Anyone out there have useful advice?  I do not want to discontinue my journey to health and this is lowering my spirits to have this knee discomfort.  I'd appreciate any help you all may be able to give.  Thank you, E

Hi,

I would say see a doctor, but understand your plight.  When you say mistracking...do you mean the knee cap is jumping out of the groove?  If you take your knee cap and move it laterally left and right....how far can you move it?  Does it move half the length of the knee cap or one quarter?  more than half?

Congrats on the 30 pounds...what is your secret?  Many times a PT regimen whereby you strengthen your quad (thigh) muscles with a stretch band will help keep the knee cap from "mistracking".  My mother has the same problem and when it flairs up, she simply exercises those muscles for a couple of weeks and it lessens the pain.

This is certainly no substitute for seeing a qualified doctor, but some suggestions.  If you can seek out PT exercises to strengthen those muscles on this site (I know they are here somewhere) .....maybe send a PM to the Moderator....

Also, I am heavy after two years of reduced activity and I find it much better to work out in the water.  The low impact exercise is much better for my knee or something similar.  Just a thought.

Keep us informed how you are doing.

Sounds like the same thing I have,a nd it's not the kneecap (trust me, I really know!).

Had an MRI, nothing (new) showed up. I feel the 'pop' a hell of a lot, mostly when walking downhill or downstairs, but sometimes it's there like all of the time. Suggested ITBS but my drs do not seem to believe me. 1 year later, no answers yet, and I keep going. But it's soooo irritating!

Good luck!
