ACLr with meniscus repair
« on: November 30, 2011, 01:07:25 AM »
Hi all, I injured my right knee in June 7 2011. The injury involved a already previously partially torn ACL which was finished off, and a torn medial meniscus that caused a permanent lock of the knee at about 100 degrees. Had surgery June 15 2011, ACLr with patellar autograph and medial meniscus repair. I was NWB for 4 weeks post op, and worked up to walking with brace locked at 0 degrees by week 6. Early on in the recovery I had slight problems with extension, and i was comforted by both physio and surgeon that it was caused by muscle weakness and/because of the knee being locked for a week before surgery. I'm now 6 months out and while it has come really, really far since then, I still occasionally have lots of stiffness and troubles with extension after sitting for periods of time. My good knee hyperextends a few degrees, and while warmed up my OPknee reaches 0 extension but does not hyperextend like my good knee. Is this a normal occurence? Have any of you had this operation and faced similar troubles? Will it improve? Should I be worried?

The stiffness and lack of hyperextension are par for the course.  I'm 13 months post-op and it was only at the 9-10 month mark that the stiffness from sitting for a while started to decrease.  Over the last 2 months it's gotten a lot better and now doesn't really bother me anymore.  I still don't hyperextend like my "good" knee, but I've been told by a couple of orthos that hyperextension isn't necessary, and I would have to agree based on my walking gait and sports activities.  So, I wouldn't worry about it too much.  You're still relatively early on in the process.

Thank you! Things are really going well, I guess I'm just at that overly anxious stage in the recover where you are ready to get back to 100%.
