Kicked a ball - Knee went pop
« on: October 16, 2011, 06:53:09 PM »
Kicked a ball with my right knee (so called good knee) on Tuesday night and felt/heard it go pop. Immediate pain and swelling so off to A&E I went. Several hours later had x-ray to check no breaks in the bones but told probably soft tissue injury. X-ray showed no breaks so sent off home (no bandages/crutches etc) and told to rest then return in a week after swelling has gone down for meeting with physio in the A&E department.

Lots of pain and swelling in the knee after the 5 days since I did it. Knee very sore to stand on, doesn't want to fully straighten and feels like its locking up.

Any ideas what it could be??

Had previous surgeries on left knee in past but this one has always been fine. The thought of going through more physio and surgery is hard to face at present.

Hard to say for sure but swelling, pain and locking are frequent symptoms of a meniscus tear (I had all of these with my lateral meniscus tear).  Does it feel unstable at all (again my knee started to buckle after a while which was disconcerting)

RICE it religiously and see what the physio thinks.  If needed, you should get a referral to an orthopaedic specialist / for an MRI

Good luck :)
Came off bike onto concrete 9/9/09
LK arthroscopy 8/2/10
Partial meniscectomy, mfx not needed - smooth scar tissue over OC lesion, shaving of grade III defect lateral aspect of patella
2nd scope on 16/12/10, chondroplasty & Durolane jab
New MRI shows lat meniscus tear & other stuff
Ostenil plus jab

I had the same symptoms after I tore my meniscus doing a karate kick.  As Vickster mentioned, keep RICE'ing it to help maintain swelling.  Hope that helps.

Good luck to you.
