second surgery?
« on: September 26, 2011, 01:55:53 AM »
I recently had successful mpfl surgery......I am avid golfer .......at 45, no more contact type sports for me. Not even running.........I can accept that.

I am 3 mos post op and developed a catch sometimes during walking on my lower patella....light pressure then a catch or pop....after, it is free its a bit scary more than painful but it stops me in my tracks when it happens........OS says I do have a grade4 chondromalacia confirmed by scope during my surgery....got the photos........looks dime to quarter sized and round.......he said from repeated disclocations/subluxing.

My quad is coming along but still soft and smaller.......when I walk, this event is random . I am trying to practice a normal gait..........successful but slow.........long distance walking my quad gets fatigued fast and I get sloppy and limp.......and the catching happens often....When I am fresh, not so much.

My OS is going to give me some visco injections to maybe smooth things and said this will also give me time to gain more strength.

He said my patella is catching when I feel-hear this noise and said he may have to go back in and graft the spot.........this was said in passing so it is not in stone with no particulars..........I want my knee to work correctly but wondered if I am being too iimpatient with my strength recovery?

Since this does not do this every time, is surgery to fix this way too soon......it has been 3 mos and I am still healing .........I couldnt fathom another surgery now.

Should I wait a full year to see how it will be completely healed.

I feel like I am having to relearn walking correctly.

Sorry so long of a post.

David.

Quad strength can take a long time to build up.. Being patient with your knee will only be to your advantage.. Maybe the synvisc injections will help you.
Have had tilted kneecaps for many years, and occasional patellar tendinitis.
