Arthroscopic Denovo NT now here
« on: September 22, 2011, 03:32:47 AM »
I am about to have Denovo NT in my acetabulum to treat a small focal defect 0.8x1.8cm. This is rather rare, however the cause was from FAI Femoralacetabular Impingement. Basically there was abnormal growth around the femoral neck which caused impingement, in turn caused a labral tear and chondral defect. I already had surgery to correct the impingement in which they re-contoured the femoral neck.
The interesting part is that I will be the first person to receive Denovo in the hip all arthrascopic. My knee doc Bert Mandelbaum and hip Michael Gerhardt  will be performing the procedure together, the reason for my knee doc is that he is a cartilage repair expert whereas the hip doc routinely performs hip arthrascopys.
Prior to this there was not options available as there is for the knee, hence the reason for me posting this for others whom may have the same problem....

It looks like I will be having the procedure sometime in November.....

Michael Gerhardt is a great surgeon, IMHO. I've had two hip surgeries w/him this year with fantastic results.

Wow, that is a crazy coincidence man!! I have to get Denovo in both my left knee and left hip at the same time this coming winter. A doc in Atlanta is suggesting it. I had FAI a few years back but was diagnosed with a defect in my acetabulum at the time. I also have a small trochlea lesion in which mfx and aci have failed. My doc gave me the option of doing staged surgeries but I just want to get them done at the same time. Right now everthing is painful. Well, drop me a line when you get a chance. Would love to chat a little bit.

Who is the doctor in Atlanta?  I have had a left knee and hip replacement.  I am going to send my MRI and x-rays to Dr. Broyles in Louisiana in the next week to see if he can help my right knee.  However, I don't believe he does Denovo in the hip.  I also have an impingement in the right hip.

Let me tell you, hip replacements aren't so bad.  Mine was done by Dr. Kreuzer in Houston, Texas, and he used the anterior approach.  He also did my left knee.  The man is a superb surgeon, but yikes, the knee replacement sure is different from the hip.  And I say this in spite of the fact that Dr. Kreuzer rocks!!!!!!!  The knee was a mess and he had to straighten my leg, so he spent extra time working on my knee and tibia ---- I had a 17 degrees valgus.  He even used the Smith and Nephew that I insisted upon. And the outcome is unbelievably perfect anatomically. There is just something about a knee replacement.  I am 6 months out so I know that my brain and body still has some adjusting to do.  It has gotten better, but the rest of me still wants my next joints to be not so artificial shall I say.

Doesn't the area need to be completely dry so the graft can be inserted and glued successfully? How can this be achieved arthroscopically? Either way, that's wonderful that it's going to be an option.

True, however that is part of what they have been working on for the better part of a year and have overcome that obsticle. They are waiting on instrumentation in which they can drop the Denovo through, some type of long tube, so that they can insert the Cells into the bed of fibrin.
They are able to do MACI arthroscopically in Europe therefore there is no reason to think they cant do the same with Denovo. Maci involves using fibrin and placing the scaffold into in.......

Just had a Denovo NT done in my hip done all arthrascopically a little over 3 weeks ago and am already better off than pre surgery. I would say its been a home run! Denovo in the hip definitely works and works well!!! Most of my pain that I had is now gone......  Woooooo Hoooooo!!!

My Doc said he will now start performing Denovo arthroscopic in the knee as well.....
