MPFL surgery & getting discouraged
« on: July 16, 2011, 04:17:25 AM »
It has been awhile since I have posted...in the beginning I was very positive. Now, I have some questions. I had MPFL surgery 7 months ago. My patella is very stable, and for that I am happy. However, I am a bit discouraged about the pain I still have when I am bending my knee. Will I get to the point of pain-free??  I am a preschool teacher & am on my knees a lot. Everything just feels so tight...I am bending at approximately 135 degrees which I believe is good, but I am not sure if the pain is normal. Any help would be appreciated :)

Hi jumpstart,

Are you able to ring your physio and ask them? It sounds to me like your kneeling could be the source of your pain (but I am no expert, so don't quote me!). At the very least they should be able to assess your progress and tell you if what you are experiencing is normal, a bit of a setback, or a sign of a problem.  135 sounds pretty good, and being a primary teacher is pretty demanding, so the pain might just be the result of all that.

Might be worth posting this question in the general questions forum (apologies if you already have).

Hope you get some answers soon - keep going, you'll get there!

Thanks for the input Brambledog.  I have posted my concerns in the general questions section & hoping to hear from someone soon.  In the mean time, I will continue stretching & see how it goes.  I told myself I would give it a year... just wish someone else could give me an idea as to where I should be 9 months after surgery.  Thanks again!

Hi jumpstart,

Hope you get some answers soon! I really would see a physio - that is their job! If you are in the uk you can ring up and make yourself an appointment, you don't have to go through your GP (physio direct, I think it's called). If you are in the US I know it's a different process, but it's got to be worth it to find out and give you some peace of mind. You're obviously worried about it, and although people on here can give you some advice, you need a professional to assess your knee and they will be able to tell you then and there. I know you promised yourself a year, but if you're concerned now at 9 months, I wouldn't leave it another 3 before getting it checked.

Any physio worth their salt can assess your knee in one session and reassure you as to what's going on.

Good luck and let me know how you get on!
