Also, if the scar tissue break up was meant to be spectacular, then I haven't noticed it happenning yet.  What about you grapplingdude?

Hey Piotr

Yes I am pretty much the same as you. I don not have much stiffness left but still have the tiny residual of "pop-out" swelling laterally and that has been near unchenged for 6+ months now.

Overall the knee feels very good and my general muscle control is better thqn ever in most respects. I still feel like the muscles around teh knee are a tiny bit slow to switch on but that is definitely better than 6 months ago.

The scar tissue breakdown is far from spectacular but I think it is in progress and hope that in another 6 months the nodules will have largely softened up!

I still get much cracking and popping around the knee cap but zero pain so I am quite positive and wanna start grappling twice per week now  :D

14 Months today and a lot has happened in Month 14:

Spent a week surfing  8) 8) No problems knee wise

Have been Wrestling twice and knee felt better / more and more stable every single time with minimal feeling of lateral give...

Have had my best Grappliung session since the Injury and definitely getting better at it again  :)

Have had on and off exercise times due to work and I hope to be more consistent again!

The residual swelling is unchenaged but my performance is up and my confidence in the knee is slowly improving!  ;D

15 months and not many changes - I upped my BJJ to 2x per week in the weeks leading up to Xmas and that was working fine even though a couple of very hard session slightly aggravated the residual swelling. Not been doing much over the last week other than eating and 2 x 10 k runs.

The residual niggles are as they have been and I would like to see my OS again because I think that the residual pop-out swelling can be combatted quite easily either by simple draining or Cortisol.

Has anyone got any experiences with Cortisol or Draining?

Hey, grapplingdude,
I have a totally different knee problem, but was reading around in you blog with interest. Thanks for the positive story. (Did martial arts myself, but because of the knees, I will give up Kung Fu (did that lately) and start Tai Chi Quan, hope it can make my happy, at least a bit).

Anyway.. I wanted to say, i would neither drain nor inject cortisol. I would say you need more patience. Draining will be of no use.. the fluid will definately come back, when it comes back. (; if there would be no fluid building any more such a swelling would go away within a couple of days. Since it is not the case in your knee, it is still building. Sometimes it takes a long time to stop such a thing. To be honest less leg related training might help, to give the joint a chance to calm down.

Also cortisol will only mask the problem for some time and then it will be the same as before.

It has been over 15 months since my ACL recon too. I have just come back from a few days skiing, which was the first real test for the knee, and it held up great.

I used a brace, more for psychological comfort than for any physical protection. The knee was really stable, and on the 2nd day I had enough confidence to really go for it and not hold back on the speed. No falls, so the knee didn't get tested with a twisting ski situation, but I am not going to force such tests! Did manage to collide with another skier (we were both trying to avoid each other by going over the top and both managed to turn exactly into each other), but no damage done.

I still have some stiffness on the lateral side, although it may be a bit better than before. Had a few incidences of what I think is scar tissue breaking up, but I don't think that process is finished. Still get cracking and popping, and occassional hamstring aches, otherwise no other problems. VMOs just about the same size on both knees, but the upper quad of the left leg still needs working on.

Piotr

Good to hear your knee has passed another test. I get a lot of clicking at the moment and hope that means that the breakdown of scar tissue is advancing!

I am now starting to go grappling more regularly again - stepping up to 3x this week and hope things will continue strong  ;)

Over 16 months now, have been trying to step up the grappling but work and illness have partly foiled me that last month.

Nonetheless, I have had some very good grappling sessions and the knee is pretty much unchanged. Some residula pop out swelling and lots of harmless clicking.

I keep wondewring what to do to speed up breaking down scar tissue and have come across a Graston? technique which is meant to help...

I will try and get a final follow-up with the OS to see what he says. Other than that I will just keep going  :)

17 months today - I have not yet lined up anything with my OS but still keen to do it!

Overall I have been grappling a lot more 2-3 times per week even 4x one week! That is a very good success and my sharpness is slowly coming back. I have been slightly slacking on my other training (strehgthening, cardio, specifics etc) but I am trying to still motivate myself to do it.

Residual "pop-out" swelling is still there not getting worse or better. I guess considering I am doing impact sport at such a levelk again that is good news  :)

Well, just over 18 months now and everything is holding up fine  :)  but my activity level has not been that high this month  >:(

I actually saw the OS again and he says that he is not concerned about the pop-out swelling and some people just get it but he thinks that the thing is pretty damn firm!  ;D

Well, that aside I am beginning to rely more and more on the knee again and am positive that things will continue to go well (or strong! really).
