PRP Platelet Rich Plasma
« on: June 30, 2011, 02:28:54 PM »
Hi Happy PRP Users,
My insurance company views PRP as "experimental" and it is NOT covered in my plan.
Since it would cost me $250.00 per shot, how many shots are required on average to get any positive results.
I'm still having pain ascending a step on the FRONT, LEFT side on the TIBIA and 2" below the Knee cap and want to rule out tendoniti, Anserine Bursitus before any more surgery.
Thanks.

I've only had the one so far. And that was only 3 days ago, so I'm still in the OMG-this-*%$^&$ hurts phase. Some docs recommend 3. I'm waiting to see what if any improvement I get over the next couple months before I decide on a 2nd go.
'77- Rt knee menicus tear
'90 -2nd menscus tear
'91 -failed arthroscopy/partial menisectomy
patella dislocation 10/ 2010
Dx = grade 4 chondromalacia + synovitis + Meniscus tear + lax strained medial ligaments
Fall down the stairs 7/20/11 - mcl sprain + 2 meniscus tears

Maybe fat pad impingement is causing your pain ? I have that and pain where you describe which gets worse with stairs, squats, leg extension. My MRI showed that.

I just got PRP 2 days ago as well. I would try it out if I were you. You should be able to tell if it's improving before deciding to get another shot - 1 *may* be all you need.

If they do not use ultra sound to guide the needle get a new doctor
you can walk out with very little pain and soreness and see results start right away
its all about guiding the injection into the right spot
had them both ways   it works either or but what a difference if you use ultra sound  no pain and better results

I just recieved my first prp injection at the toronto semi clinic , i have mild OA in both knees but the left is worse due to a break in the leg 2 years ago that caused a tear in medial meniscus . i see none has posted here in a while but im hoping honeybunch or amoler will join back into the discussion and let me know how the have done since you started your injections .anyways there was no ultra sound guidance and after t he injections there was less mobility but no real pain , it just felt like the synovial cavaty is full . so i took the weekend off and rested the knee and as of monday it feels much better ,was told not to expect any real improvement or difference for a month or 2 . i will be getting a second injection in 2 weeks and after that i will pause for a month and see how it is working . at $750 a shot i dont want to just rush in and sign over my house . so are there any new members that are going through any thing similar ?

prp did not help with my articular cartalige tears. Human Growth Hormone did though. its not 100%, but it was at some point after the treatment. Until I overused it. bah.

If PRP is made using an adequate centrifuge that concentrates to at least 4-5x baseline, you shouldn't need more than 5-6 cc's of PRP......whereas the knee can hold a lot more if it's a "dry knee".  If its full of fluid it needs to be drained first.

I recommend stem cells+PRP vs PRP by itself for any joints.  The booster shot in 6-8 weeks can be PRP......the stem cells will still be there.  I did PRP on my knee but I would have put some stem cells too if i could harvest them myself.
