Phil,

I have a similar injury, not as many fractures, mine was 3 majors with significant displacement. Have been wired back together. I am a week behind you, my injury happened Sept 8. I would like to keep up to date with you on your PT progress and types of exercises you are trying. I went to PT first at 4 weeks 5 days, however, even they were wary to do any manipulation with the knee until 6 weeks to ensure bone has healed.I will be going back next week to begin formalized PT, but have been doing my own exercises at home continuously through the day.  I have a secondary issue I am dealing with which is that I broke my back at the same time, so this limits a few things I am able to do, but wearing a brace helps a bit for that.
My follow up xrays are not until Nov 6, I think the OS assistant misunderstood his notes and rather than xrays at 6 weeks she did it 6 weeks after my last appt with him when I had my staples removed.  No biggy, I am carrying on with how my body feels.  I know the xrays will show healing and I will report to him what I wish to do to carry on.
I believe you are limited to doing PM to me until you have 20 posts (silly, I am currently trying to build up my 20 now, lol)

Hello.

I am a 39 year old active male. Unfortunately I joined your club on the 31/7/12, three weeks after I got married. I slipped over on a mouldy tennis court and fractured my patella in 6 places. I was operated on the next day and they inserted three pins and some tension wire. I had my leg in a full plaster for two weeks and a brace for a further 8 weeks. The fracture clinic allowed me to take the brace off two weeks early as I was already off crutches and I found the brace so uncomfortable. This did however make me feel very vulnerable at the time.
Those 10 weeks were really rough. Everyday activities like dressing, washing and walking are extremely difficult and of course there is the pain and the lack of sleep that this brings.
Thankfully I am now almost at week 16 and things are getting better. My leg is still swollen and my knee looks quite different from the healthy one. Although I still experience constant discomfort I am no longer taking pain killers or sleeping pills.
I have been having PT since 13/9/12 which has been great. 2 weeks ago my ROM was measured at 120 but I expect that it has now increased.  I have borrowed an exercise bike and I try to do daily exercises but I do rest my leg when it becomes sore.
Over the last 3 weeks I have been attending hydrotherapy on a weekly basis. This has been amazing and assisted my ROM and quad recovery considerably.
For those of you who are reading this having just fractured your patella it is really tough but it does get better. I look forward to attempting to try and walk down the stairs in a normal fashion. I am also keeping my fingers crossed that I do not experience any further complications as I have quite a large step on the inside of my patella after the operation.
It has been reassuring to read about people that have shared similar experiences who have been able to return to a relative normal life. It has also been extremely useful to know how many of you have had your hardware taken out as this option was not discussed with me.

Good luck with your recovery.
