Numbness, post-op advices
« on: January 01, 2012, 10:21:00 AM »
I did my PCL recon last Friday. The graft came from my hamstring. And I'm feeling very down.

I am currently wearing Berg's brace and I've removed the ice pack brace ever since I was discharged coz they make my leg feel even more numb. Pain is uncommon so long I'm stationary. The only visible swelling is on the inner side of my calf.

My operation began at 9am, I was told it ended at around noon and I woke at 1.30 in the pm.

3pm - my lower limb (left leg, below knee) started to feel pins and needles
8pm - progressively worse - the leg was pretty numb by then. The nurses told me it might be general anaesthesia. Told me to wait 24 hours
The next morning at 10am - doc told me the numbness probably came from the tourniquet they applied. Told me would take 1-2 days.

Currently it's sunday evening and I still feel the same numbness. I'm getting kinda afraid, worried about the numbness.

I wonder if my nerves might be permanently damaged?  ??? I can wiggle my toes though. The nurses said they could feel my pulse in my foot so it should be fine. But I can't feel anything.

On a side note I can't move properly on crutches - my physiotherapist told me doc's orders were that recovering leg should be partial weight bearing. However I can't feel my foot and I don't know how much weight I've placed on the foot.

I've been ordered to do several exercises at home.
I can do most of them but I simply cannot do the hip abduction and adduction exercise.

Also, would I recover faster if i were to do as much exercise (leg raises, isometric quad etc) as possible or should i simply stick to the stipulated 10 reps, 3 times a day?

What should I do, what should I eat in order to recover as much as possible?

Thank you!

You probably had a femoral block which leaves your leg feeling like a lump of ice from the knee down. I had one in for a week after some bone work and it tools ages for it to feel natural again. Just take your time and don't worry too much yet, it will gradually wake up.

Follow your surgeon and physio's instructions, even if it does feel like you are dragging a dead lump along. The more you begin to move as per your instructions, the sooner things return to normal.

Be glad that the numbness is making your knee pain-free.
