Stress and anxiety can interfere with regaining muscle
« on: May 03, 2011, 02:27:21 PM »
If you are having trouble getting muscle back after surgery, or just building it up to help your joints, you should be aware that the high level of cortisol in your blood that stress and anxiety cause is going to cause your muscles to break down. Cortisol converts muscle protein into glucose. Work on getting your emotions under control, be happy, and you will probably see an improvement in your muscle rehab. Knee surgery and the inherent long recovery can present some challenges. Let those around you know the importance of a good mental outlook for getting better, so everyone can support you. Cheers.  :)

So true yet rarely discussed among the orthopedic community.  Most have no idea what knee surgery is like unless they themselves have undergone this.  I find the most credible surgeons are the ones who have lived thru knee surgery/recovery.
I will remember that there is art to medicine as well as science, and that warmth, sympathy, and understanding may outweigh the surgeon's knife or the chemist's drug.

I will not be ashamed to say "I know not", nor will I fail to call in my colleagues when the skills of another are needed.

I am finding this to be true.  For me if I don't have a clue what is happening it freaks me out.  There are so many things I wish I had known prior to surgery and post surgery.  It is a whole process and journey with balance being the key.

Good reminder to stay positive and focused.
Rt. knee pain while hiking 08/10
Rt. knee giving out jogging 10/10
Rt. knee unable to move 12/10
Twisted rt knee 02/11
Saw GP 04/11
PT 05/11  failed
MRI  clean 06/11
1st OS, nothing wrong, fired him.
2nd OS, cortisone shot 12/11
Scope 05/12, fat pad impingement, cleaned and reshaped.

Well it is very hard to say that to say that anxiety might be the cause of this problem after surgery . First people need to consult with expert orthopedic who might give you the best advice on this issue . He would suggest you muscle gaining exercises after discussion .
