Does a torn ACL make a clicking noise?
« on: March 23, 2011, 11:32:23 PM »
Tore my ACL 7 years ago. Had it reconstructed along with some meniscus removal. It's generally been great ever since. Now three days ago, bumped by knee playing hockey. Didn't think much of it when it happened. There wasn't really any pain or infflamation. The days following, there's been substantial clicking noises. Not sure if this is meniscus related or ACL? I can't speak to the stability of the knee because I haven't done anything for 3 days. The biggest symptoms are clicking, and a somewhat dull annoying pain. The clicking noise seems to be coming from the front of the knee.

I have an appt to see my orthoped, but I'm trying to getting some answers beforehand. Any help is appreciated.

Your best off getting checked out, as you well know obviously. But i would imagine it is probably either meniscus related or perhaps a bit of scar tissue thats slipped around the joint ??

No idea, if anything though a lack of significant swelling is always a good sign and TBH if you had never injured that knee before i reckon you wouldn't be half as worried as you are now !!!

Good luck

I know exactly what you're talking about. I tore my ACL, MCL, and meniscus and just had my ACL repaired 12 days ago. Before that, and before the meniscus and MCL were healed with physio, my torn meniscus would catch on the bone in my knee, which causes the clicking noise. You could just possibly have loose cartilage somewhere.

How hard of a "bump" was it? It's probably not an ACL injury, as you would likely experience significant swelling. Could be meniscus. The knee cap often makes loud clicking sounds if it is not tracking right due to injury.

My kneecaps aren't very good and they click, especially on my operated knee. If the clicking comes from the front then it may be kneecap related which is relatively harmless.

Is the pain also at the front of knee or is it a dull ache from inside the knee?
