MFPL reconstruction - How long off work??
« on: March 12, 2011, 05:26:20 PM »
Hi everyone,

I'm going in for a MFPL reconstruction in 2 weeks and I just wondered, for those who have had this, how long you were off work for?

Also, how long you were restricted/on crutches for?

I know everybody has different healing times etc. but I'm just looking for some general advice.

Any advice would be appreciated  :)

Hello,
Back in december I was playing ice  hockey and i was playing goalie. It was my game to play,a guy took a shot on me and my knee gave out and went sideways.I tore my MPFL dislocated my pattella and broke the end of my femur(yes i know alot). Now im in high school and my school had lots of stairs so my doctor did not want me going to school.I was out for 3 months. My surgery was esspecialy bad because he had to drill holes into my pattella for some of the cartilage fill in the femur fracture.I went back to school March 5 and i was out since December 15.Now my surgery and injury was esspecialy bad because of the fracture.I am three months post op (Surgery December 23) and i am just now starting to walk. Now we took xrays and it still showed a fracture but the doctor said I can walk.Yea he said I can walk on a broken leg.It is still very swollen, pain and most of all I a feeling this crackling noise right around the fracture. The day of my surgery he said he might have to go back in there to smooth, shave the bone out.Now since there is this crackling, pain, swelling and the fact of its not healed still.Does anyone think In need this?Anyfeed back is greatly helpfull and anyothers who are going through this!

Sorry to hear of your probs at such a young age Hockey.
I would be look for a different OS if he thinks walking on a fracture is OK. Get off it and let it heal.  If you were my kid he would have a mad MOM on his butt. ;)
You need to walk on this leg for many years to come. You sure pulled the short straw Dude. I would get as second opinion especially since you are so young.
Hope things get better soon.

I think you and your Mom are right.  A new set of xrays would be helpful.. You could always try the I fell and my leg is killing me and off to the ER for a set with a set of different eyes to look at them. Sometimes you need to get inventive to get what you need.  Just a thought.
Hang in there Dude.

Hey  :)

I havenít had my MPFL recon yet but my OS said Iíd be out of school for a week, be on crutches weight bearing as tolerated for 1-2 weeks with an ROM brace locked. Then it would get gradually unlocked. Iím starting PT after my first post-op appointment. He said I should be walking normally in 6-8 weeks and fully recovered in 3-4 months. But all doctors have different protocols.

Good luck!

Thanks KW and Oohheykate :)

I'm getting quite nervous about it all now so just wanted to see what other people have gone through or been advised :)

You should check you some post-op diaries in the post-op section or search "MPFL reconstruction" in the search bar.
