Anterior knee pain after injury
« on: July 10, 2010, 12:11:17 PM »
I hd an MRI and the report states :  Multiplanar MRI of the left knee.  Subchondral cysts are present in the femur at the patellofemoral joing and in the patells.  There is no joint effucion or popliteral cyst.  The cruciate and collateral ligaments are intace as is the extensor mechanism.  Type II signal is present in the posterior horn of the medial meniscus without apparnet surface tear.  The lateral meniscus isi unremarkable.  The patells is in normal position, with thinning of the articular cartilage and intact retinacula.  There is osteophyte formation at the lateral patellar margin.

Please explain this in layman terms.

Thank you.

the type 2 signal in the posterior medial meniscus may mean a medial meniscus tear. the other stuff isn't particularly actionable, so far as I know.
multiple arthroscopies 2/00,3/01,6/01,1/03, 12/07,10/10. chondromalacia, severe medial joint space narrowing following 3 partial menisectomies, chronic pain problems, kneecap problems, OCD lesion, failed mfx.

I'm no expert but...there may be an issue in the medial meniscus (increased signal) but no apparent complete tear (those are the shock absorbers between the bones of your knee), there is thinning of your articular cartilage on the kneecap (may well have been there prior to the injury, common place for wear and tear), on the outside edge of your patella there is a bone spur (usually linked to some form of cartilage damage on the kneecap, could have happened along with the thinning - dare I ask how old you are?), and there are some pockets of fluid/cysts under the cartilage on your femur, around the kneecap joint and under the patella. What did you do to your knee? What pain do you have? Did you have issues around the kneecap/anterior areas prior to your injury?

You really need your doc to explain this in more detail and tell you if they recommend any surgery or if these can be managed conservatively..
