One week to go!
« on: April 15, 2010, 12:06:20 AM »
As a PKR survivor (Sept. 08) in my right knee, I'll be having a TKR on my left a week from today. Lots of medical appointments in the last few weeks to get ready, but today was the last one (thankfully). Meanwhile, my PKR knee has gotten worse, with arthritis elsewhere so I just hope it'll survive the PT for my left knee. Only time will tell. I'll be getting the Biomet Vanguard Signature knee in my left knee, one that requires a MRI of your entire leg so it can be customized to you.
I've been off Mobic for 2 weeks now and can barely move around without a lot of pain in my left knee. At my pre-op with my ortho this past Friday I got a new prescription for some Percoset to take at night (replacing 18 month old Darvocet, left from  my PKR, that was losing its potency) so now at least I am sleeping relatively easier.  My feet, hips, shoulders and knees are aching during the day. Can't wait until next week when I'll be back on th anti-inflammatories following surgery.

Really sorry to hear your PKR is causing you pain.  Do you wish you'd had TKR rather than PKR in that knee?  I ask because my left  knee is a candidate for PKR, having had TKR in my right in January. And so sorry to hear arthritis is causing you problems in other joints.  It is a real pain this osteoarthritis, what did we do to deserve it? ???

I wish you all the best for your TKR next week.

Hi Redwing. Thanks for your repluy. In aswer to your question about if I wished I'd have had a TKR in my PKR knee, the answer is no and yes. No, because at the time I had it, there was no arthritis anywhere else in the knee except in the medial compartment and I was hoping it would remain that way, so it was the right choice at the time. And no, because I did get a good 15 months out of the PKR and I 1) didn't want to wait until or if I needed a full TKR,. and 2) I couldn't have gotten through those 15 months with my knee feeling as it did before the surgery. Yes, because the odds are I'll have to have the PKR knee revised to a TKR knee probably in the next year to two years at most. I should've figured this was going to happen!

So that's my take on it!

Caroline-
Sorry to hear that your PKR knee is giving you some trouble.  When I had my left knee replaced last summer, there was no doubt that I needed a total knee replacement due to the cartilage loss, etc.  However, this past fall when I went in for my 6 month check and complained about my right knee pain we weren't sure which direction to take.  My Dr.  knew about my right knee discomfort since that one has always sounded worse and 20 years ago when I was 16 I injured it and he was my orthopedic back then too.
Anyway- with my right knee, we talked about a partial replacement.  His thoughts were that a partial replacement would be good for me if there was no other damage anywhere else in the knee- but that he wouldn't do one if there was any damage, any sign of damage or anything like that.  His main thought was that if he thought he would have to replace or repair it if it was a pkr within 5 years that he would rather do a tkr (meaning if he thought the damage was going to continue.)
So- in January I went in for a scope to determine the damage and we came to this conclusion.  My knee has zero cartliage around the patella and I have very little cartilage on the anterior side of my knee.  He said that due to the fact that I still had a little cartilage that it wasn't completely necessary for a total replacement and that I could get away with a partial replacement, but if he did a partial replacement, it would probably only be about a year before I would need a total- so he would not feel good about or comfortable with just doing a partial replacement on me.  So, we decided on a total replacement for my right knee in June.
I know that I have read a lot on here about dr.s not wanting to do replacements on patients of my age (I am currently 36) but mine does not have a problem with it as long as it is needed.
Good luck with your surgery and hope that the pkr knee stays healthy long enough for you to complete your p.t. for your tkr knee!

Hi Kit!
When I mentioned to my ortho about the increasing pain in my PKR knee, after describing what and where it is, he is sure there is arhtritis in there. But he says he doesn't like to do scopes to find out exactly what is going on in there because they tend to make things worse more quickly. So we're just keeping an eye on it. He knows he'll be seeing me relatively frequently for the next 6 months so he said he'll periodically check on it, which works for me for now.  YOu just never know about how things will work out!
And you are quite young! The odds are you would eventually need a TKR anyway so why go through mmore surgeries if you don't have to! Good luck to you!

I am looking forward to it! As much as surgery isn't a wonderful thing to have to do, I'm sick of the constant knee pain, hip pain, that is currently going on!! Only 3 days to go, thank goodness!

Hi Caroline,

As an alumni of the PKR threads, facing the same PKR dilemma that you are, you know my prayers are with you on the TKR surgury. Should I say, "see you on the other side" or have you heard that before?
LOL

All the best,

Thanks, Stan! I am ready to go, bright and early tomorrow morning. I have to be at the hospital at 5:45AM which means I'm the 1st surgery of the day for my doctor. I'm glad I won't have to sit around (I hope) waiting for my turn!
I'll be back on the other side of the surgery!

Caroline, been reading the updates on FB but when your ready.. you might want to mention experience difference  between PKR and TKR.  Since you have some first hand insite that may be helpful to those who are not sure what to expect with a PKR or TKR.

Hope all is well this Mother's Day

Surgery is done. Walking around with a cane the last week. Skipped crutches entirely and can go in the house without the cane. SUrgery went well-knee pain is more diffused compared to the PKR. No hamstring and calf cramping that I had last time, but one spot where the quad comes into the knee gets a lot of pain when I'm tired. Prescription pain killers are still a requirement but not as close together in time as before, except at night. Like the PKR, night time sleeping stinks! PT is 3 times a week, with the tortuous knee bending, that has brought, at just under 2 weeks post-surgery, to a ROM of 103 already!~ That was almost a week ago and am hoping for some increase tomorrow. ROM on PKR knee is 135 which I'm very happy with after 19 months. PT guy and ortho are both hoping that the PKR knee pain will lessen as the now-TKR heals. I'll hold my breath for that but we'll see!

Sounds like you are doing well...........no cane in the house is pretty darn good after only 2 1/2 weeks!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;D   Sorry to hear you're a fully paid up member of the 'up at night club' though.  It will get better, you know that.
