Sudden pain and stiffness
« on: January 14, 2010, 02:41:51 AM »
As i've posted before am almost one year out from mfx of quarter size lesion of  the lateral femoral condyle. My OS cleared me for all activities just before christmas. I have been slowly increasing my level of activity-doing some light running but mostly biking and strenghtening exercises. Biked 8 miles on saturday and 9 on monday, woke up tuesday morning with worst pain and stiffness of any time since i got off crutches. Rested yesterday and did 30 min on stationary bike today, but not feeling any better. Usually the stationary bike makes the knee feel better but now it seems worse. Just when i thought was almost healed and back to normal! Now i have no idea whats going on and what i should do now.

Hi,

Oh no, what a pain (literally). Is the pain back in the area that had the MFX or does it feel like a general kind of "overdone it" type of pain? Any swelling? Does it respond to ice? I guess that hopefully you've just done a bit too much and the MFX site is feeling a bit niggly and has told you to back off. I guess it *could* be any number of things - worse case the MFX might be seriously unhappy, but it could well be that the knee is just feeling a bit overused. I know somewhere else you mentioned some patella damage - well, it might be nothing to do with the MFX but the increased bits of running/biking might have started that to feel a bit inflamed. I get miles more symptoms from my patella wear than from the OCD lesion - in fact the only reason the OCD lesion was found was due to the MRI for patella problems and I'd say that 5% of the time the lesion bugs me (wrong angle with weight) but 95% of my problems are patella based - typical PFS symptoms of aching, burning after too much exercise, strong dislike of hills and stairs, sitting with knee bent for too long, squats, lunges, extension with weight etc, loads and loads of grinding - always patella never femoral condyle area.

Not sure that tells you what to do next - I guess given your history of MFX I'd be seeing if a couple of days of complete rest and ice and all the usuals helps things - perhaps try and whack in some stronger NSAIDs in case it is patella irritation (sometimes a day of Naproxen kicks mine back to tolerable level) but if things get worse or don't improve then a visit to the OS might be required.

Really hope things settle down, all fingers crossed.

Yea am not sure what could have happened. Oddly enough, the pain which is in the area of the mfx (outside back part of the knee) seems to subside once i start moving around and walking. Seems to be the worst after i lay down at night. Let me emphasize that its not any kind of disabling pain and stiffness by any means, more like a feeling of "this could get worse if you dont watch it." My situation is exactly opposite of yours in that my patella problems were revealed by MRI for my condyle problems. Haven't had any kind of symptoms from the patella as of yet, although went through that with my other knee 10 yrs ago. Guess i will just give it some rest, which is aggravating because i felt like i was just starting to get back in shape and start whittling away some of the weight i gained in the last inactive year. I guess thats the way the ball bounces...

Sore today, i think i overdid it over the weekend. Its sad when these days overdoing it would have constituted a warm-up for something in my pre-mfx days!

Goodness, tell me about it!! My whole cardio session is now akin to what was a warm up!! Then I'm off to the lying down free weights with some grunting and some Power Plate!!! :o ;D

Doesn't sound like things are worse, hopefully the upwards trend will return!

Take care
