Hi i had microfracture on lateral femoral condyle over 6 weeks ago, i was not told to none weightbare.  I have been in agony, cant stand pain when any weight is put on knee; when bent, ie going down stairs. I start physio tomorrow, but i dont think they are aware i had mf, i had to get a letter from doctor which states exactly what i had done.  Can anyone tell me when i should feel beter.

I also have stetched knee ligaments acl, pcl.  I am not sure if this is contributing to pain.

Any advice apreciated.

|Hi there

Sorry to hear you've got so much pain still. I am guessing that because you were not told to keep weight off the knee/leg the defect they fractured must have been in a non weight bearing area - or if it wasn't your OS takes the view that weightbearing doesn't impact upon recovery. Usually from the experiences posted here you'll find that most people were NWB for a period of time after MFX - I haven't gone for mine yet as I'm undecided on other options but mine is a weight bearing bit of the medial femoral condyle and I was told no weight for 6 weeks apart from the odd toe touch and then 6 weeks weaning off crutches. I know pain after MFX can last a long long time, again, a lot of people on here will be able to comment more on that. Does the pain you have seem to be in the region of the MFX or is it general knee ache? I guess if the ligaments are not as strong as they could be they won't be helping the knee support itself, and given that your quads will likely have got weaker after surgery as well the whole knee isn't going to be feeling happy.

I would definitely discuss with Physio why you've got so much pain - your word use of "agony" indicates that things are acute still, and not settling and that needs to be looked at to make sure things are all OK. Spell it out to the physio what you've had done too, and how much things hurt. If things are normal, then targeted physio is probably what you need to get some strength back and try and let the MFX do its stuff. If things are truly agony though and getting worse I think a call to your OS might be in order to check what is going on.

Good luck tomorrow

Hi-I'm wondering about the location of your defect. Like Lottie said, whether your defect was in a weight bearing area is a huge consideration. If it is and your OS did not instruct you to be on crutches for 6 weeks, you could have undone the mfx procedure as soon as you put weight on the fragile marrow clot the surgery was intended to produce. Were you instructed to wear a brace? Its my understanding that patellofemoral (non weight bearing area) microfractures require a brace to be worn in order to protect the repaired area although weeght bearing is allowed. All in all, i find it hard to imagine that you're going down stairs at a point (6 weeks post-op) when myself and many others were just starting to contemplate getting off crutches. Obviously i dont know your whole situation but in my opinion your OS owes you some answers as to why you werent given specific instructions as to how to protect your knee post-op.

Microfracture on lateral femoral condyle over 6 weeks ago. Still in agony.  Thanks for your replies.  I havent been told exactly where the damage was.  I didnt even know that i was having this op, went in for arthrosopy, but signed consent form, for further work.

Just attended physio, PT didnt even realise i had this done.  I took a leter from my doctor to show what had been done.  PT was going to ring surgeon to find out what i should or shouldnt be doing.

I am disappointed i havent been told, wether the area was none weight bearing or not ?

Thanks
