looking for a doctor who understands HMS!
« on: December 15, 2009, 10:33:42 PM »
Hi,
I'm in the San Francisco Bay Area and am desperately seeking a rheumatologist or orthopedist who specializes in hypermobility disorders.  I have so much joint pain, two failed ACL surgeries, dislocating shoulders, a fallen arch, sacroiliac dysfunction... and I'm only 35 and a former college athlete!  Need to find someone who can help me out. My current docs just say yes you're hypermobile, sorry it's a tough condition to have.

Much luck to you all and thanks in advance to anyone who can give me a recommendation.

-Lisa

Hi Lisa,

Sorry to hear what you are going through.

I would suggest looking for a good physiatrist.

Got a great team of docs but unfortunately I am in Australia.

I am just grateful they know how to manage my hypermobility, pain and instabilities that I have had.

Am the same age as you and suffered a lot of joint instabilities. Had both shoulders operated on, left ankle twice and knees a total of 8 times. Am pleased to report that my shoulders are pretty good as well as my ankle and left knee. Having surgery in February for my left knee which should resolve my instability.

One of the things I found that really helped is clinical pilates or rehab pilates which it may be called over there.

Good luck !!!

Look in to a Dr. Rodney Grahame in England, he is the worlds formost expert on the subject. He has written two books about hypermobility and is great at communicating with people via email. You can order his books online.

Hope this helps,
Kira

Kira,

Lisa is in the U.S.

Another idea would be to see a Physiatrist.
