7 weeks ago I underwent MPFL reconstruction with a LR in my left knee. I have been going to PT regularly. I am making progress, though I am not where I would like to be. I am wearing a hinged brace. At 4 weeks they were able to unlock the brace. I am experiencing a sharp pain in the front of my knee cap when trying to raise my leg. (example, when i place towels under my knee and attempt to lift my bottom portion of my lef off the ground). It is not a "sore" type of pain. It is not a "stiff" pain. It is SHARP. It is unlike any other pain I have experienced in my knee. I am not seeing my OS for two more weeks. Should I be concerned? Has anyone else experienced anything similar? If so, what was the outcome?
Thanks so much!

Robin,
I had the exact same thing happen after my left TTT revision and MPFL recon. I was progressing really well in all areas, but when I tried to do a darn SLR I got an incredibly sharp pain under my kneecap. At first my physical therapist tried to encourage me to work through the pain, but the pain was just too intense and no matter how hard I tried to work through it, the pain was horrible. It felt like someone placed a knife into the front of my knee.
My local OS, the OS who did my surgeries, and my PT were never able to figure out the cause of this sharp pain. The best my local OS and the OS who did surgery could come up with was that it was related to the muscles being too weak.
I do know that the pain eventually lessened and then went away. It took a good 4-5 months for that pain to be completely gone.
Mention it to your OS. For me it never ended up being a huge deal...more of a nuisence that eventually worked its way out.

Brianne- Thanks so much for your response. I am seeing my OS this week and will discuss it with him. My greatest concern is that the pain is getting worse. My PT had me reduce the number of exercises put completely remove certain exercises from my daily PT. That was nearly 4 weeks ago. His hope was that taking a break from certain exercises, the pain would go away, or at least not be as intense. Instead, the opposite has been true. Did they do an MRI on your knee after the surgery when the pain started?
Lastly, quick question about regaining ROM. I am almost 8 weeks post op and am still walking with a brace. My ROM is about 80 degrees. My PT says this is normal, though he would like me to be a bit further along. I was making consistent progress until I hit about75degrees. Since then (about 2 1/2 weeks) i have remained at the same ROM. It's frustrating. What was your experience with regaining ROM and returning to a "normal" walk (and walking up stairs")
Thanks again for your reply!

Robin,
My pain also got worse. We completely stopped my rehab for about 3 weeks to let the pain settle down. My OS never did an MRI of my knee. Once I let it settle down then we started again with gentle exercising and built up from there.
ROM is hard after the MPFL. It would feel like there was a rock in the side of my knee. I found that massaging the heck out of my MPFL graft helped a lot with ROM.
