Hey guys, Just thought I'd keep some sort of post-op diary following my ACL knee recon using a LARS ligament as I found it hard to find too much info when making my decision, especially trying to get an idea of what info on LARS was true or false. I had the surgery done in Perth after seeing a couple of surgeons and getting differing opinions. I am now two days post op and am stoked to be back on the mend . My OS kept me in hospital over night to check how it went and to make sure I had no reactions to the meds etc. In recovery I was in a fair bit of pain until the nurses gave me some Opium based drugs. After the drowsiness wore off I was actually quite comfortable and in miminal pain. The next day my OS checked on me and said I was right to go. The hospital physio came to see me, used the CPM machine at 60 degrees and went through some exercises to do, I was able to get to 70 degrees bend max. Unfortunately the PT doesn't know much about LARS so he wasn't able to comment too much on how my progress should be. I have been doing the exercises he provided 3 times a day. First night back at parents place, I am lucky enough to have my parents and gf looking after me , I was in more pain than at the hospital. I certainly could not walk out as some have claimed. Today I feel quite good but am keeping up the pain killers. However, laying down on the couch I am finding my hamstring is getting quite sore, which I am not sure is normal or not? Well, I better keep up the exercises, I see my PT in 8 days and see my OS in another 12 days. Cheers guys Rusty

Hey Rusty
I'm sure you will do fine with the Lars, I have 3 ligaments that are Lars and honestly the ligaments haven't given me any greif......my problem is moslty scar tissue related. Rehab with Lars is pretty much the same with regular ACL rehab, you may be able to get around a bit quicker but ROM goals and so forth remain similar. I was told that Lars are nothing like the old synthetic brands they used to make so I have no worries unless I was involved in rough contact sports.
anyhow good luck

Thanks Jess,
Good to hear yours have all been a success. Well so far so good anyway. I am confident they are not like the old synthetic ligaments also. I do plan on getting back to playing soccer but that wont be for quite some time. Sorry to hear about the scar tissue, hopefully it can be avoided/treated. I'm not sure where my ROM should be by when but sure the OS will let me know if on track next week.
Well Day 3 and am feeling alright, still find changing clothes quite awkward and luckily I have my gf to help me shower, otherwise that would be even more awkward! Exercises are going well though I am always unsure if I am doing enough/doing them right.
Anyway, I better keep going through all these insurance forms which seem to take forever!
Cheers Rusty

Hey guys, Well I am almost one week post op. Probably coud have gone to work today (just an accountant so cruisey desk job) but decided to play it safe and am also feeling a little lazy. However, first day back tomorrow and am a little anxious as I will still be on my leg a lot more than I have been the past week and will have to do my rehab exercises at different times. Overall recovery is going well, still on the painkillers but am starting to take less and the pain is reducing. The knee is already starting to feel stronger. I will continue to use the crutches for a while longer but can take the occasional small steps without using the crutches. May drop down to one crutch soon. Thats all I have for now but will make another post on Friday after seeing my PT. I'm looking forward to hearing how he thinks the progress is going, what bend I'll have in the knee by then and learning some new exercises to do . Cheers Rusty

Wow, back to work after one week. That's pretty fast, even for a desk job. I was off for about 3 weeks, and then continued to work at home for six weeks. (I have a really cushy job that way. Very easy for me to work at home.) Make sure you continue to ice at work and set up your work space so that you can elevate your leg. Good luck!
