knee looks different after physical therapy
« on: August 17, 2009, 11:01:16 PM »
Had surgery 4 weeks ago, figure 8 wire and 2 pins. Been  in immobilizer since then. Started PT today.....passive ROM to about 10-15 degrees, plus some patella manipulation and massage.  Did not have major pain, just uncomfortable and scary. He told me to ice when I got home, which I have not done in 3 weeks.  After I removed ice, I noticed an indention that went across the top of my knee cap that appears to be about where my main fracture line was.  There is also more pressure below the kneecap and like a bulge there. The indented line was not there before, as far as I know.  So, I called and spoke to my OS nurse.  She said I would know if a pin or something was coming out or if I had refractured it. Has anyone else noticed differences in the knee after PT....like lumps, lines, bumps that you hadn't noticed before?

Hey there!  I too started PT today - broke my kneecap 10 weeks ago though but also have the same wire and 8 pins.  My knee doesn't look any different from the PT but I can tell you that when I haven't iced for awhile and then do ice - I get weird indentations that last a few days.   I don't know if the ice is actually breaking down swelling inplaces or what.   The indentations "pop" back out though and I've never experianced any pain.   Hope that is all you are experiencing!   Very cool having PT after four weeks post surgery!!   Congrats on your progress!

Hey Kb!...

This is a question right up my alley! Your can feel your hardware beneath your skin. That can explain some of those bumps. If it had moved (like mine did) you'd know it. You'd get a pins and needles sensation. It's enough to stop you in your tracks. Once your HW is removed your knee may still not look normal. I have a bit of knob that sticks out on my knee cap on the fracture line. My OS says it's nothing to be concerned about. That's just how it healed. Also When I bend my knee I get a small protrusion right bellow my knee cap that is very noticeable. My OS says it's the "fat pad". Somehow in my recovery the tissues that hold it in got torn and when I bend my knee it now protrudes from that tear. It looks ugly, but causes me no problems, Another thing my OS says not tow to worry about.
