Hip pain because of knee problems?
« on: July 20, 2009, 12:15:15 pm »

I have had pain in my hip for one week, which I suspect to be bursitis brought on from my weak leg - weak due to the fact that I am still recovering from an October 2008 Fulkerson Osteotomy.

Has anyone else felt similar hip pain? Is this a big red flag or a temporary complication? Any ideas in how to overcome it?

Thanks!

yep, tore my mcl 6 weeks ago, have hip pain on daily basis now due to an altered gait caused initially by knee pain - knee is ok now but its like ive forgotten how to walk normally so am stuck with painful hip. sorry cant offer you any advice apart from to say there is probably a link between your knee and your hip pain so keep on asking. post the answer on here please if you find it, i will do likewise.
good luck :-)

There is a really great stretch for this..

Let me try and explain

Lay on the floor on your back.
cross one leg over your body twisting at your hips and try and get your toes to touch the floor. You should feel a really good stretch in your hip on the leg that you are crossing over

30 seconds 4 times each side.. 2 times a day.. I did this and can finally sleep ..

ALso if your partner (wife or hubby) can massage your hip . butt area, you will be able to find the offending area really easily from the pain when you put pressure on it while lying on your side... Hurt side up

Hope this helps.. it really worked great for me..

Tore my ACL and MCL sprain about 3.5 weeks ago. Starting about 1 week after my fall, I started having hip ligament (?) pain on the same side as the 'bad knee.' I find that it's better when I just relax (it's hard) as I walk/limp and MAKE my quads do more work instead of just dragging my leg.

I'm worried that my incorrect gait will cause so many other problems. Anyway, talk to your PT about finding exercises and stretches that help.  But, really, you must build strength in your quads so that they can start doing more work instead of your hip joint.

Good luck and I do feel your pain (literally!)

Hi there...my name is Anita and I am  6 weeks post op from an High tibial osteotomy.  I have this past week been having hip and groin pains.  I asked my PT and she told me that this is completely normal.  You are correct in saying that the difference in our gaits in the culprit.  I am still in the immobilizer brace and it doesn't allow me to bend at all.  This is making it difficult to walk correctly.  I see my orthopede on Tuesday and hopefully he will give me permission to stop wearing the immobilizer...even though I don't feel right when I am not wearing it. Hang in there..we are all in this recovery together.

I'm so glad I found this post. I am having hip problems as well. I were an unloader brace that I will be wearing until the decision to replace my knee is made (thinking long term could be anywhere to 2 years and up). My hip has been sore often but getting worse. I have spoken to my doc and they did feel some cracking and popping. But as in the last month I can't got for a hike or walk without it being very sore I'm at the point where I'm not sure if my hip hurts more than my knee. lol. It feels like Its also giving and the feeling shoots down to my "good" knee. Anyone have this feeling. I have found if I walk a bit it will get better but it KILLS while i"m doing it. Its like its stuck and needs to be worked out.
I stopped lifting for a month I was soooo busy and I wonder if its because I jumped back on the outer hip machine doing the same weight and should have cut back. So I'm going to go easy on that and talk to one of the trainers/pt people at the gym.

Thanks for your help. I'm going to do the stretch Kerri suggested.

Great post - I developed frontal hip bursitis (iliopsoas burtsitis) versus the more common side hip bursitis (tronchanter bursitis) after my knee injury.  Mine was due to walking with one crutch / incorrect gait / overcompensation, and doing too much too soon in physical therapy (too many straight leg raises)!  It really sucked, and I had to go back on both crutches for over a month after my meniscus trim (still awaiting an acl recon at that time).  It took one month to settle down completely with absolutely no exercise and as little movement as possible (even sleeping was difficult), and a round of coticosteroid pills (anti-inflammatories didn't even touch the pain).  Since then, I've learned how to monitor my exercises/workout for my knee to make sure it doesn't flare up again, and stretch it daily by lying on the bed on my back, hanging the bad hip/leg off the bed to give the front hip flexor a great stretch.  This might not do a thing though if yours is side hip pain.  Talk to your OS or PT and they should be able to help you!  Best of luck.

My pain is more the side of hip but I do have some in front. I have been favoring my bad leg for so long walking, standing etc that I know I'm in for some hip surgery and my doc has said as such.  I have to make an appt to see him in Oct to go over a total leg alinment xray (I wish they did the hip too). So I'm going to bring up the hip again.

Opensky= how are you? God bless all the people who hvae an Osteotmy. I was a canidate for about a second. lol.

Thank you everyone for your responses. My bursitis has significantly improved.

Lady, what do you mean "about a second"? Have you heard arresting things about Fulkerson Osteotomy's from your OS?

I was a canidate for a second becuause..when I found out how severe I would have to be bow legged and the percent of positive outcome due to my situation 30%. I said NO THANKS. I'm going ot hold off as long as possible for a TKR. I don't even want to go for a PKR right now. Although I may change my mind on the partical. But right now I'm in limbo, me and my unloader brace.
