Does it feel like your leg yet?
« on: May 01, 2009, 04:48:55 AM »
I'm about 3 months post injury. 2.5 months post surgery. I've been full weight bearing for around a month.  I have some minor pain and swelling, but nothing major. Haven't taken so much as a Motrin since 5 days after my fracture reduction.  I am still, at almost every moment, aware that there's a big ol' hunk of metal in there.  I feel as if I'm walking around on metal spike stilts.

Do you still feel like that thing below your thigh just isn't your leg?  It's so... alien.  I really don't want to go through another surgery, but I'm starting to wonder if hardware removal would somehow make me feel more organic or not.  I'm tired of forcefully redirecting my mind from that not quite right feeling.

I didn't find the thought of the metalwork too bad until about 2 months ago (3 months post-op) when it started playing up. (see the Screw Pain thread) 5 weeks ago the surgeon said it looks like I need the hardware removing and since then I'm starting to feel uncomfortable with it. It may be just psychological but I don't think so. At least one screw is moving and, I think, so is the plate. I just feel it's holding me back and that, once removed, I can get back to proper recovery. It seems that hardware removal is not such a big deal ... as long as it goes smoothly!  ;D
Accident in France 1st December 08. TPF, plate and 7 screws
22 weeks later, now only 6 screws!
11 months, slipped and broke Femur. Plate and further 10 screws in femur
16 months now only 15 screws, another came out!

Hi Aggie

My leg felt so alien that it became referred to as the Faberge Leg - fragile & clearly the most expensive thing I owned!

Sortof the same comments I made in the screw pain thread - it was a separate thing still around the last OS visit in October & at that moment I would have sworn it would remain so.  But somewhere between then & now it has become mine again.  I don't feel the screw anymore, only occasional twinges indicate  that the plate is there & when I do things I am not thinking about whether the leg can or not.

I still have some limitations, but they are decreasing.

Hope this helps.

I'm only just beginning to feel that this thing is my leg again.  I don't think it will really feel completely like mine until the hardware is removed and I have a few months after that to regain some more strength.  I used to be proud of my legs - the definition and the shape.  Now, my left leg has one big scar, five little ones, a bump where the plate is, and almost no definition.  It's quite a blow to my ego.

After 3 years, I can say - you get used to it.   If I really stop and think about it, I can still feel the difference in that leg from the hardware, but I don't really think about it all that much.
To StuDogg - you have to give your leg more time.  Believe it or not, in a couple of years, the scars will be faded, and your muscle structures will get much more normal again.

StuDogg I can back what RandB said using my cousin (again).  After her recovery she wore(still wears) miniskirts & shorts.  The scars didn't stand out, certainly the muscletone has long ago returned.

I'm coming up on a year & can honestly say the size & def is similar now.  At the gym no one seems to be staring as I exercise or walk around.  I can look & still see the differences but the change from fwb in Aug to Feb was huge & dramatic( ;) in a good way).  Now the changes I'm seeing at the gym are subtler.

I can honestly say that I am actually feeling pretty good about my leg these days.  Yes, my ROM still stinks.  Yes, my knee has a big bump on it from the plate.  Yes, I have a HUGE hockey stick incision.  Yes, the area around the incision is still numb and it bumps against the car door as I'm driving (freaks me out).  All things considered, I'm in pretty good shape.  I am back at work.  I am coaching (assisting) my sons' baseball team.  I can walk pretty well since I think I turned the corner this weekend when I noticed that my limp is considerably better (not gone...just better).  Believe me, I will NEVER diminish the impact that this injury has had on me and my family, but today I worked with a 17yo boy who had 9 pelvic fractures, an IM rod put his his right femur, his spleen was removed, and a TBI so I am doing pretty well.

I love Studogg's shamelessly honest comments about TPF's impact on the ego -- hilarious.  And in contrast to Morgana, I get the impression Stu would actually PREFER to be stared at while at the gym.   ;)

I'm at about a month FWB, and my leg/knee still feels a little alien, but I think this is from my muscles, tendons, and ligaments still getting used to FWB after three months without.  I think this is just a matter of time though -- the difference between post-op Week 13 and post-op Week 17 (where I am now) is simply amazing.

I suspect that I'll get used to the hardware feel when it's just about time to have it all removed (early 2010?).

I would never get stared at at the gym (unless I dropped something or tripped!).  I'm basically average height, average weight - a few extra pounds, but not excessive.  The one thing I've always been proud of are my legs.  Some day, I'll have that definition back in my left leg and the scar won't be too bad!

Don't feel bad Studog. I used to have pretty legs but didn't realize it until my TPF. Shortly after surgery, while doing my isometric exercises on my couch' I noticed how pretty my left leg looked compared to my right, swollen leg. Now, even my left leg is not looking that great because I'm not using it as much as I used to. I should be working it out also. I never appreciated what great shape I was in until now. Even more reason to work hard at getting that nice shape and muscle tone back.
