Pain question for old-timers (2+ years post TPF)
« on: April 15, 2009, 09:34:18 PM »
Hi there.

I am a little more than 3 years past my TPF now.  It was a pretty bad one, type VI, with plate and screws.  Things had been going pretty well, but recently I have been experiencing a recurrence of foot pain and swelling.  It seemed to take FOREVER for my foot to stop swelling during the day.  Now some days, I get  swelling across the top of the foot, near the base of the toes.  It becomes very sore, too.  Then to top things off, I experience stabbing pains that feel like being jabbed with a hot needle. Sometimes in the foot, sometimes at the ankle or above. That is the best way I can describe it, not that I have ever actually been jabbed with a hot needle...
These pains happen randomly, so far not too often, thank goodness.  I just wonder if anyone else has ever had this problem.  TPF - the injury that just keeps on giving....
Type VI Bicondylar tibial plateau fracture 2/28/06
Surgery-L plate and 8 screws, 3/7/06
4 days in hospital
13 days at in-house rehab.
6 mos. PT
Was NWB in wheelchair 6 weeks
PWB 20 lbs only, 4 weeks, on walker
WBAT since then, walker to crutches to cane
walking OK now, stairs still difficult

Hi RandB,
It wld be difficult to relate it to ur old TPF becuase this occurred 3 yrs ago. However, my daily PT session also invoves foot and ankle work. If any of ur little foot muscle is disengaged during ur walking it's likely that this will break a so called "kinetic chain" meaning that eventually ur foot will start complaining. Try to consult a podologyst (foot specialist) they can really help.
Lots of luck

Hi ya
First let me thank you for all posts and your faithfullness on this site. Yeah, people are watching you ;D I do not have pain like you describe--but pain elsewhere-mostly knee which has led to hip-to back--just keep going. I would go see my OS if I was you--or maybe you already have.
I broke my ankle  when I was injured and do experience minor pain around joint--but nothing like what you are describing.
Go get it checked and let us know what the OS says.
Also see if you have any good info to share --thoughts --on my new topic TKR after TPF.
