Rehab problems after TKR
« on: October 22, 2008, 07:39:56 PM »
Hi I had total knee replacement on Sept 18, 2008. The surgery went well but I'm having trouble with my rehab. I have been in thearpy for 3 weeks now and can not regain my range of motion. I have reached 65 degrees and can not get any further. My physical thearpist has suggested I have a manipulation done but I am not sure. I have followed all my excercises regularly and have no idea as to why I cannot regain my ROM.

Try posting this in the board dedicated to TKR and you might get more responses. It's in the Knee Arthritis section right at the end!

I would personally (not yet had a TKR though) that 65° in 3 weeks is not too bad, but you need to talk to the real heroes on the TKR board.

Good luck and don't go down the MUA way until a surgeon advises it - PTs are good but they are not surgeons!

Contact your OS.   Have him have a look see at your knee.   He will decide if you need Mua.   You wont get more flex than you had prior to the operation but  90 degress is functional.

Do you have steps?  In PT I had to place my foot on one step and bend it to 90 degress say like 50 times.

Than a ball move your legs in and out..   Don't be afraid to push it with all your might.  It is certainly better than having a PT do it while on the table.

You want to be as agressive as you can the first few weeks.

Please give yourself some time and lattitude and do not get impatient as I did. You will take two steps back for every three forward. If the PT's are competent they will try different exercises to get you up to speed. Trust me, YOU WILL KNOW IF A MANIPULATION IS NEEDED!! Introduce yourself to ERMI very carefully. I'm at 12 weeks post TKR and having a tough time due to scar tissue. Some of us have it easier than others. Do not give up!!
