I had a partial meniscectomy six months ago, but still have significant knee pain especially on stairs or walking hills. My OS thinks it may be due to patellar tendonitis, and has me doing eccentric squats. He claims that tendonitis is common after knee arthroscopy. Has anyone else experienced this?

I hate knee problems

I had the exact same thing after 7 months post lateral meniscectomy. I ended up having to get a second surgery because my lateral meniscus was still oddly shaped. I'm still experiencing most of the same problems after second surgery but I'm only 3 weeks post op. Hopefully, those pains go away soon. My doctor also tells me that I might have patellar tendonitis and to keep doing those eccentric squats and the IT band stretches. unfortunately, I don't see him again until september. I hope to be running by then.

I think this is happening to me as well. I had a partial meniscectomy 10/21/08 - medial and lateral. My surgeon told me he had to move my leg into a certain position during surgery which has caused pain in what I think is my tendon (what feels like a bone behind my knee - lateral side). It aches and it hurts when I try to sit cross legged on the floor or move the wrong way too quickly. All else feels good, but this other problem is bothering me as I am up and down on the floor a lot for my job. Anyone else have this? Any suggestions? I am disappointed as I went in to have one thing fixed and ended up with a different problem.

I realise this thread is a bit old but just thought I'd add my thoughts! It seems to me that an awful lot of people who go in for partial meniscectomy come out with more problems/different problems than they went in with! I know that the nature of the people on here is that they tend to be people for whom things have gone wrong or they wouldn't be on here in the first place but I'm not basing my little deduction about the "dangers" of meniscectomy purely on this site! It just seems to me that from asking around there are a huge number of people who have had partial meniscectomies and many of them have negative outcomes eg that they have had worse problems ever since, sporadic swelling and pain ever since, worse pain than before the surgery, it never really settled down or recovered after surgery etc etc. I too had partial meniscectomies (both knees, both lateral) 12 weeks ago and so far it's been a nightmare! I only had sporadic pain before the surgery, I had perefctly functioning knees 95% of the time but the sporadic "flare ups" of pain led me down the arthroscopy route thinking that I'd end up with perfectly functioning pain-free knees! How WRONG!!!!!! I am awaiting the results of MRIs on both knees that were done on 10th December as I've been in major pain ever since. My left knee (Which incidentally used to be my "good" knee of the two!!) is really painful with very limited function, my self-diagnosis is that it's fat-pad impingement coupled with patella tendonitis and possibly scar problems as my medial incision site seems to be tethered down (possibly to the fat pad??) and causing a constant cycle of inflammation in the knee. My right knee is not quite so bad but still MUCH worse than before surgery. All in all I wish I'd never had anyone poking around inside my knees as it has turned my trusty old knees into a right bloody mess!!!! My advice to anyone considering arthroscopy for torn or worn menisci is to consider something that a Physiotherapist told me...something like 88% of dead bodies are found to have torn and worn cartillage in various joints (when an autopsy is carried out) and many of these people have never even had any symptoms from them, or symptoms too minor to worry about. Our bodies are full of bits that are not as good as they used to be and poking holes in your knees, bloating them up with saline, sticking cameras, lights instruments etc inside all to take out a bit of torn cartillage is a rather drastic and risky thing to do and will inevitably cause some degree of damage and may not bring about any relief from the original symptoms. I hugely regret having my knees scoped and my meniscii trimmed, it's caused me nothing but pain ever since and my gut reaction is that things won't just get better, I believe permanent damage has been done and I just desperately wish I had my slightly dodgy but otherwise okay old knees back!!! jane

Knee pain since 2002 2006 MRI shows lateral meniscal tears but I don't do anything about it for 2 years! Oct 2008 Bilateral arthroscopy and partial meniscectomy in both knees (both lateral meniscii) Very bad slow recovery from this! Jan 2009 MRI shows surgery caused damage to medial meniscus!!!!

hi...first i broke my hip, but recovered REALLY well.....then i tore my meniscus during PT....so i have had two surgeries now to "fix" that, with nothing but pain and stiffness, which my workman's comp doctor actually yelled that it was "all in my head" and my atty, cas mgr and doctor all want me to have a psyh eval! i am not crazy, my PT doesn't think i am crazy, in fact, she thinks i have had patellar tendonitis all this time..............so i wanted to add my two cents: the hip was easy, this menisicus stuff is ridiculas....i wish i had my old knee bak, too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When I first went to the knee specialist last October, he told me I needed to strengthen my quads by biking and using an elliptical trainer. He spent less than 5 minutes examining me. After months of increasing pain, I returned and he ordered MRI which showed torn meniscus. Surgery was last Friday. So far, recovery has gone amazingly well. I was off crutches totally in 2 days and was able to drive after 2 days (surgery on right knee). I returned to work on Monday and am getting around fine, albeit with a slight limp. Throughout this time, I have had no pain. The day after surgery my knee felt the best it had in 8 months. I get stitches out in 2 days and start PT next week. For all I know, I may have trouble later, but I wanted to share my experience since it was different from others posted.
