Hi Kirsty,

Not long now till you see your OS and hope he can sort out your right knee for you, Sorry your job is too far away and considering another job closer to home which makes sense if you dont like to travel far. I am lucky takes me 15 minutes to walk to work and good not to use the car all the time.

Hi ! I tried replying to your message but for some reason the sytem wont let me.  (Btw my name is Grace) I wanted to say that I am in the same position as you.

I had the MPFL and the Trochleoplasty done on the right knee but I also have slight maltracking issues with my other one.  The problem isnt as great as the right where I constantly get patellar subluxations with that one.  Actually I fell in the first place and the right kneecap subluxed and its been like that for a year and half till Dejour corrected it.  My leftie is stable but the patella moves in a curvature motion.  I guess I have to wait till something happens and the kneecap is semi dislocated then i have to consider surgery.

So far everything is going quite smoothly yet slowly.  Apparently the first 45 days are the slowest and hardest in terms of progression.   For the first 2 weeks after the operation, there was a lot of pain issues at the beginning since we were trying to figure which meds work the best.  The pain was pretty bad since its just not only the knee that hurts its also the inner thigh as well since the doc took a long graft for the MPFL .Im now on Tramadol and an anti inflamatory which is awesome.  In the beginning, my knee was heating up quite a bit but I think the anti inflamatory was able to cool it down which is a relief.  But the pain is mostly under control.  I do get the odd inner thigh pain every now and then.

Flexion is pretty sucky at the moment and the physios had put me on this machine callled Kinetech which passively flexes your leg.  I dont really like it all that much cos at times it hurts when it flexes and it hurts when it straightens my leg.  BUT i think I ll take it slow I dont want to have major complications and such.  I started doing a little bit of straight leg raises with the physio.  OMG its so freakin hard.  Constracting my quads is easy but actually lifting the leg up--its a lot of work!

What sorta physio protocol your doc recommended?  I really hope ur doing well and the pain isnt so bad for you and that you get ur other knee done and over with.

Hi Everyone,

Well, not long till I see my OS now. Seeing him tomorrow afternoon. I just pray he can do something as my right knee is so painful since I fell and can't live with this much longer. I really feel that my right knee is stopping me do more rehab with my left knee. I will definitely be pointing that out to him tomorrow.

Nick, I hope to get a new job soon. Applied for quite a few now.

Grace, you wouldn't have been apply to reply as you need to have posted at least 20 times. Just email me as I gave you my email address in the message. I am glad to see that you are progressing well. Am pleased that you have found some meds that work, it can make a big difference. When I had my MPFL reco I remember it taking quite a while for the flexion to come back. I also remember leg raises took a while, so you are doing well to even do a few. For me I wasn't allowed to do much in the first 3 months after my trochleoplasty. It mainly working on flexion and getting some strength back. I wasn't allowed to do any weight bearing exercise. It was probably about 6 months before I could get back in the gym which almost killed me. I was back at pilates about 3 months post-op. So, the idea of another trochleoplasty makes me feel ill. The pain has not been great at all. Just hope he can do something to relieve it.

I will update once I have seen my OS tomorrow.

Hi KG friends,

I am feeling very relieved tonight after seeing my surgeon.

He agrees that there are still problems with my right knee and so are going to go ahead and have an arthroscope and trochleoplasty. So, I am sooooo relieved tonight. He said that my knee cap could take up to 12 months to recover from the fall I had.

My surgery is booked for the 11th of February.

Wow...Kirsty!  I am really happy for you...once you get your right knee straightened out, maybe you will finally be on the road to being pain free!  I sure hope so....it will be a long road ahead for sure though but at least you have a plan now that has a chance of getting you back to your normal life again.  How long has it been since your left knee was done?  Maybe your right knee will be easier since you know what to expect and what meds to take, etc.

Hi Francine,

Thanks so much for your sweet message.

It is soooooo bloody hot here. Only meant to be the start of spring. I think it is going to be a very hot summer.

Yeah, I am looking forward to a life almost pain free. I know I will probably have some level of pain but will be much better than it is now. Am in so much pain even to walk at the moment. It will be 18 months at the end of November that I had my left knee operated on. So, hopefully my left knee will hold up well. At least I will know what to expect, as you say. I am having the same team of doctors, which is good. My sports physician will be assisting and will have the same anaesthetist. This anaesthetist is great. He really knows how to get the anaesthetic right as I often get sick and my asthma has not been great, which I am worried about. My OS said it should be fine. He said that the operating theatre is the best place to be if anything goes wrong as everything is there.

The worst thing is that I need 6 to 8 weeks off work and probably won't be able to drive for 6 to 8 weeks. Yuck !!! It will be worth it in the end. One really good thing is that my OS says I don't need to worry about physio as I have been through this so much before and can do the rehab myself. Will just be guided by my surgeon and sports physician. My last knee physio gave up on me anyway and pointed that out to my OS yesterday and he just laughed and said I could do it myself. That made me one very happy lady.

Bring on a life of less pain and suffering. Hope you are doing ok.

Hi Kirsty,

Glad that your OS appointment went ok but need more surgery on your right knee but you knew it was going to happen just as I knew I would end up needing surgery on my right knee in less then 6 days time. 12 months is a long time for knee to get back to normal but sure a year will fly by as they seem to do every year. Not being able to go to work or drive for 6 to 8 weeks sounds like a long period but you will know its worth it in the end if your OS fixes your right knee.

Sorry you could not have your surgery sooner but at least you have got a date to plan ahead to and got your sports physician and the same anaesthetist in the theatre so everything should go smoothly for you.

Hi Nick,

Thanks for your sweet note.

I have had a really bad day in terms of pain in my right knee. My sports physician finally rang back. He is leaving a script for me to pick up tomorrow morning. My sports physician tried speaking with my OS yesterday, but missed him. He will speak to him before I see him next Tuesday. I was really grumpy at work today as I didn't sleep well last night due to my knee pain and was in agony today. Just felt like crying.

You are right, good to have a plan now that I work towards. Still don't have the paper work which was supposed to be sent in the post yesterday.

Hi Kirsty

So glad that your OS appt went well. I think that's really good that your sports physician will assist - I'm impressed! Sorry that your knee is misbehaving - maybe it overheard and thought it would have a last bit of naughtiness before it is sorted! ;-)

Not too long to wait. With Christmas in the middle, it should fly by.....Also, hopefully, the biggest stretch of your recovery SHOULD be a bit cooler? It has been roasting this week! I am appreciating the low humidity though - makes a big difference.

Having a gastroscopy next week followed by a surgery the following week which I am starting to get nervous about - mainly the cannulas and the coming round bit. Have lots of trouble with those 2 things due to blood pressure and weird veins...Will be good to see what's going on though and get one issue sorted for good.....

Hi Itigo.

You are right, I am sure the time will fly. It is already about 12 weeks to go. Just can't wait till it is sorted out.

Sorry to hear about your gastroscopy and surgery the following week. Email me about it. Love to know the latest.

You wouldn't believe it, but the house mate fell through. She never showed up and hasn't contacted me. So, back to square one.

Hi Kirsty,

Bad luck with your housemate and was looking forward sharing your house with her and would think she would have at least contacted you saying she can no longer move in with you.

Monday is not far away now and thinking in a positive way about my scope as I will know what I am dealing with at last.
