Torn MCL. Rested 4 weeks, excercised 1 week, now new injury?
« on: January 16, 2008, 05:07:12 PM »
Hello Everyone,

I am new here buy have been reading this board and information from it for the past month, and I am a 23 year old male. 5 weeks ago, i had a partial mcl tear or sprain while playing basketball. The MRI and x-rays I got showed nothing. The MRI showed a dot in the middle of my MCL, but the dr. told me it was just blood and my MCL was not completely torn.

The Orthopedic specialist here where I live, in Mexico, told me to not use my leg AT ALL for 4 weeks. I did that successfully. During that time period the swelling went down after about..... a week, and I didn't ice and elevate daily like i should have.

During the entire 4 weeks my knee would always make popping sounds, and sometimes be uncomfortable or hard to bend fully until it popped... then the pain went away. Before my accident me knee ALWAYS popped while playing basketball, this has been for about a year. Overtime the pain got worse, so I started playing with a tight brace. The one day I didn't play with a brace was the day this accident happened.

At the end of the 4 weeks, I saw the Ortho guy and he said I could start training doing excercises with ankle weights on and to stop using my crutches. He said after a week I should start running. So at the beginning of week 5 I ran for about an hour. During that time I heard a pop, and I could no longer walk. I felt pain in the area of my MCL for about 24 hours, and a TON of swelling.

The pain I felt in the MCL area(the inside of my left knee) was not in the same place the pain was from the original accident. 36 hours later(today) my knee is still swollen. I have no pain in my mcl area. I can put pressure on my knee and take steps without crutches. The only pain I feel is when i try to bend my knee now. I am HOPING that is only because my knee is swollen. My first injury gave me no pain when i tried to bend, just instability. Now I have no stability issues, but I feel pain or discomfort when i try to bend my knee. Can anyone possibly tell me whats going on? Thanks.
